'Palworld' Aka Pokemon with Guns Developer Sued By Nintendo & The Pokemon Company

Lets see. I have a feeling nothing might happen, but considering what you say that this made a bunch of money and has garnered a lot of attention, you never know. I hope it serves as an incentive for Gamefreak to step up a bit and put out better games. Palworld developer’s other game, specifically Craftopia, has been on steam since September 2020 and looks like this.

Cheers!

And Genshi Impact is essentially the same thing with taking “inspiration” from BotW.

If Pokemon will come after Palworld it will be for the more specific things like the assets, not the general themes which is much more grey in what they could successfully sue them for.

there has been some discussion that one of the people who made the model comparison did so because they were upset that the game seems to glorify animal abuse, going out of their way to alter sizes of the models to make them seem more similar than they would have been without manipulation (i assume this is the one who compared the lycanroc and lucario models.)

i still find it hard to believe that they just happened to end up with nearly identical using shapes, color schemes, proportions, etc on so many mons. i don’t wish ill fate on the developers. i also don’t wish to support what seem to be so many shortcuts taken on creating aspects of the game.

idk if i’ve mentioned it here yet, but they do have so many unique creatures. if they would have just been more diligent about making all of their mons distinct, there would be far less of a reason to even be discussing this.

The ones that look the best have the least relation to Pokemon designs, so yeah, they should have done better.

My thoughts: The news doesn’t shock me. I love Pokemon, but I feel there’s been “space” for something else to come along for similar games that are more innovative or more exciting to play than the existing Pokemon games available and that build on these types of games as opposed to recylcing the same things. When you consider the size and success of the Pokemon company, I honestly feel the games have been lacking for a while compared to other Nintendo titles (Mario, Zelda, etc).

Nintendo I’m guessing probably just hasn’t felt a need to push the Pokemon games in a new direction as much as it makes a ton of money off many other areas outside of the video games and so the games maybe aren’t as high priority as the TCG or other areas perhaps. So only a matter of time before something like this Palworld came along.

Anyway, they can definitely make a game as good or better than this one if they wanted to I’m sure of it. For whatever reasons they just haven’t taken the Pokemon games as far as they may have ever wanted to and stuck to the same old type of games for years now.

Sadly, it wont.

There’s no reason for them as a corporation to do so. Each new generation of pkm sells more than the previous despite the quality, going down drastically. They earn more money and allocate less budget to the game, why would they actually improve that?

The vast majority of the target audience for pkm games dont actually want a good game, they just wanna have fun seeing their beloved pokemon wandering around in a new “world”.

Yeah, Game Freak doesn’t care as long as the mainline games continue raking in 10 figures. Its leaders don’t care if people feel the franchise’s potential is being squandered, and I don’t think they have the foresight to consider that Pokemon might not enjoy its current position forever if kids today aren’t given a great game to fall in love with. If they did, they would have expanded dev teams long ago.

I think the best hope is for Nintendo to experience enough 2nd-hand embarrassment to really pressure them to change. Nintendo seems to care about the rest of its platform sellers, their legacies, and their audiences. Mainline Pokemon games are a big deal, and they drag the Nintendo brand down somewhat.

Is it possible they ripped assets and modified them so they aren’t 1:1? Yes.

Is it possible they ripped assets and used them as a frame to build their own models? Also yes.

Neither can be outright proved unless one witnessed it directly or obtained testimony from someone who witnessed it. Looking at the model comparisons and saying “it definitely was (x behavior)” disregards this fact of unidentifiable truth.

I found some surprising insight into the legal aspect below. It’s about 25 minutes but for anyone curious I feel like its worth the listen!

Also something we all gotta remember is that the mainline pokemon is mostly the “catapult” for the new generation and from there all the new merchandise for the latest generation.

That game must release like clockwork in order for the rest of the merchandise to ship accordingly, a delay or more time of development for the mainline game could potentially lead to delays in all the other branches aka losing millions.

Sounds like litigation is on the horizon.

The wording makes it seem like this is primarily related to the Pokémon mod for the game, which they immediately took down ofc.

A good watch that goes through all the claims against Palworld and debunking some of them. A pretty balanced take / summary!

I wonder how long before we see 10 million sales

I echo the hopes that this puts them under pressure to develop better games instead of relying on one-off gimicks and supbar efforts.

The fact that this game is doing so well just feels embarassing for Pokemon. I’m not personally interested but even my coworkers are talking about this game.

I’ve not heard about this before… but DANG! Some of those sprites are really close, but it IS merely a subset of sprites, so… IDK.

Personally, I don’t care. Going back to my project.

Eevee :joy: :skull:
