Ouch! Royal Mail lost my cards. :( - Finally an Update!

Hi again guys,
It has been a long 6 months since I last saw my submission and I had lost all hope of ever being reunited with my cards again. Luck would have it that they were returned to me right before Christmas, which makes for the best gift Royal Mail could have given me.
Original envelope and box were completely destroyed and taped up, I cannot imagine what happened to it that caused such damage. Luckily enough, other than a lot of dust on the outer part of the card savers, the cards themselves were absolutely intact.

I am obviously over the moon, and just wanted to update the community on this happy ending. Thanks everyone for the input and support during this ordeal. :blush:

Hi guys,
Story time once again.

A couple of months ago I sent in a submission to PSA as I’ve done many times in the past with Royal Mail.

As I checked the tracking number my package seemed to be jumping around the US and bouncing between depots until it eventually got ‘delivered’ to PSA. Much to my surprise, PSA refused the package and returned it to the sender. I spoke to one of their reps who explained this was either because the packaging had been opened or was damaged and as such PSA could not accept it.
Up to this point I was obviously worried with the condition my cards might be in, but at least I could see the parcel being returned which would mean I could assess the damage and try to understand exactly what happened (was it customs that ripped the envelope, did it fell off a truck, was it water damage?).
Eventually the package arrived at my local depot, so I went to collect it but much to my dismay, the person there said it had been sent to the national sorting office as there was no visible address so they were unable to return it to the sender (me).
After an e-mail exchange with Royal Mail’s customer service I was told that if no valid address is found the items will eventually be destroyed and recommended that I file for compensation. Unfortunately, maximum compensation I can get for it is £250 which means I’ll be a couple thousand pounds poorer, but to be honest it isn’t even about the money, it is about the thought of having my poor Masaki Alakazam and my Mewtwo and Pikachu Goldstar being shredded to pieces by Royal Mail and me not being able to do anything about it.
Even though I know there is barely any chance that these will escape destruction, deep inside I am still hoping that once Royal Mail review my claim, they actually manage to find the package and bring it to me somehow. No matter how bad the condition of the cards is, I would rather have them delivered than getting a lousy compensation cheque instead.

If some kind soul here works or knows someone who works at Royal Mail and may be able to pull some strings, please let me know.

Oh boy.

I hats super sad indeed and this has in fact happened to me also, but I was lucky and the package was returned to me after PSA refused it.

Here’s some things you can do:

  1. Email USPS and ask them for photos of the package. They take them automatically when they scan them through depots. If that works, use those images with Royal Mail to show them what it looks like. This may increase your chances of them locating it.

  2. Email PSA and tell them what has happened and see if they can assist you further.

  3. If you are unhappy with your treatment, always escalate to the manager with postal services. Remember to always remain calm and focus on the package, not their service.

I’ve had another package just fall off the face of the Earth that PSA sent me (returned sub) and it still perplexes me how these situations happen.

Is that true? Undeliverable packages get shredded in only weeks?

@garyis2000, unfortunately it has been a couple of months already.

The fact she recommended I claim compensation means that either she believes that filling the claim will trigger the depot to try to locate and return it to me, or she thinks there’s little hope of it getting returned.

Only time will tell, but if I ever see those cards again, I’ll be sure to update this thread.

Shit, hopefully you can find someone at Royal Mail who takes a more personal approach to helping you. From my experience with them you can get some quite compassionate and helpful people there.

Such a shame for such great cards to be shredded. That would be really rough to lose a significant portion of your collection, my condolences.

Hey,

I really hope there’s been some news - but please do let us all know of any updates that happen as this is terrible.

The only advice that I can give, would be to

  1. Just keep on calling their customer services, to the point where their manager knows who you are and even if possible, try and get it contact with that manager directly, or even their head of department as they can take more stringent actions. The more staff that know of your situation within Royal Mail, the better your chances of success rather than getting someone from outside to help you. Your cards are in the system somewhere, and as soon as you stop contacting them they will forget. Keep reminding them! Use the USPS scan images as evidence of what they look like if you can, even if it CCTV footage from when you dropped it off!

  2. Check on LinkedIn for Heads of department names or emails if you need to contact someone directly. Search on Twitter if anyone else has been in your situation. I too cannot believe that the ‘destruction department’ hasn’t got a log, internal email address or formal logging system in place for someone to not get in contact with within Royal Mail.

That’s all I can think of mate.

Just my thoughts, nothing for anyone to take seriously, but from a customer service perspective you’d really think that PSA would have a good policy of taking pictures of damaged packages before sending them back to upcoming disgruntled customers, that’s just my personal take.
Even still, Royal Mail could have at least made contact with PSA being the return sender to investigate addresses. I understand they’re busy with loads of parcels but still, parcels are only all too common now for them to be just destroyed without any automated process attempt to be investigated back, be it with a code or barcode.

I’ll have a look and see if I know anyone at Royal Mail.

Again - to anyone in the UK, if you know of anyone that can help prevent these cards from being destroyed please do recommend something.

Sorry to hear this, it’s the worst nightmare scenario. I feel for you hopefully I read this thread in the not too distant future that something got resolved :blush: all the best with it.

Time for an update.

Got a letter from Royal Mail today and it seems all hope is not lost. If all goes well I’ll be reunited with my cards within the next six weeks. :blush:

Random question (sorry for jumping in), I thought PSA only allowed Fedex for international shipments (says on their FAQ)? You are allowed to ship to them with Royal Mail from the UK?
