No Rarity falling behind?

With how this market is for everything in the tcg world , has anyone else noticed Japanese No Rarity Base not being sold as high or in some cases lower than previous last solds recently?

For example I was under the understanding that a psa 9 NR Charizard should be more expensive than the 1st edition, yet we have recent sold NR Charizard psa 9 at 27k on Fanatics vs a recent sold(s) of 1st edition Charizard at 30+k

Seems odd but this market is also crazy odd so :man_shrugging:

More niche, smaller buyer pool. No rarity requires explanation while 1st edition stamp doesn’t

Makes sense , just still weird that even the No rarity Charizard is less at this time than the 1st edition in psa 9 where it sold for more almost all the time especially the psa 10.

Cards that require a lot of explanation about its value/rarity are hard to hype up.

I have no data to back this up but I think it might have to do with such a subtle difference in the card. They’re not like English 1st editions with the stamp, it’s just a small difference with the lack of rarity symbol. Like mentioned I think it’s a hard thing for investors bros to hype up when it’s not such an obvious difference.

Yes rarity is better

I’ve stepped away from no rarity long ago but I’m still picking up cheap 9s (common/uncommon) when I can. I’ll always have a soft spot for this set despite it’s lack of popularity.

The majority of collectors simply don’t know about no rarity. And on top of that, the market has pull in so many other directions only a handful of us discover no rarity and want to buy it. In consideration to value and living in the vendor-driven era, english base, if it ever comes up, is far more recognizable and still engrained in most people’s memories from the LP box breaks.

Personal opinion but I still think it’s a good play long term.

Getting nostalgic and off topic here, but one of my favorite memories on this forum is reading through shizzlemetimbers articles on no rarity over and over.

People watched the gamestop squeeze and applied it to card stock. My opinion on the market is all inflated numbers by everyone thinking their cards are gold. “Moonbreon”(terrible name for it) isnt a $1500 card but the community gets excited and spends a ton of money on it because people are squeezing it. Its a pretty card but not worth over $150-200 imo and umbreon is my favorite pokemon.

Everything goes through cycles. During 2020/2021, 1st Ed Base went insane for a variety of reasons discussed many times on here. Then it pulled back a lot in 2022/2023 on a lot of cards. Some people thought PSA 10 1st Ed Base Charizard was headed for $1M+ in 2021, but I recall sales where it fell 50% or more from the peak pricing in 2022 (Summer time), and many others collapsed in value as well.

With things like No Rarity, it’s a set that requires more knowledge and one that is not as well known to begin with, both to new collectors and those returning to Pokemon. It has factors playing against it overall. Unless you’re in the Pokemon hobby for a while or you have a more intense interest in the Japanese market, there’s simply a smaller amount of collectors/buyers at this point in time who can drive it upward.

Maybe as time goes on things will change and NR will gain more value, demand, notoriety, etc. But at this point in time, it’s in a bit of an awkward position where 1st Ed Base exists which is where the money flows more easily. It’s sort of like MTG where everyone wants Alpha more than Beta, even if the Beta cards have a lot of compelling features they just don’t carry the same weight in the market overall.

Regardless of all of this though, No Rarity cards are still great to collect. They’ve performed well over time. No one knows the future, so I say if you enjoy them, then I would collect and take advantage of the prices accordingly if you believe they will continue to go higher over time. That’s what I did when I bought lots of 1st Ed Base in 2022/2023 and it’s paid off for me now from both a collector and ‘investor’ standpoint.

Just curious, why 30k?

@smpratte he said recent solds of $30k. My opinion but people shouldn’t be spending $30k on individual cards. My opinion also may contain some bias though as thats more than 6 months of my income.

I won’t buy a 30k card because you can’t afford it
