My personal MtG x Pokemon crossover - got some Magic the Gathering artists to draw Pokemon versions of their cards!

Thanks for another brilliant update. Like others have stated, this is really one of the threads I look forward to the updates to be able to check the artist renditions.

This batch is so well done. The Paras is so clean but that Muk is absolutely glorious. As Brendon stated, really looks like an homage to Kusajima artwork.

Thanks so much for sharing the update. Looking forward to the next batch.

Cheers!

Would love to add an artist proof to my collection based onsomething that could merge Magic and Porygon, not easy because it’s more a technological/virtual creature when MTG universe is more fantasy based.

If you have any idea…

Love this thread and you got a really wonderful collection!

You could look through cards here and see if anything stands out. Both of these sets are highly focused around technology.

thank you very much!

Beautiful collection, @viridian! I spent hours admiring each piece; it was such a joy. Psyduck, Cubone, and Gyarados are favorites, but they’re all amazing. I’m excited to see where you go next! :sparkles:

Actually you reminded me that I forgot to upload my Porygon proof to the photos here, haha. Here is mine.

There’s a plane called Zendikar where these objects called Hedrons are really important. They kinda reminded me of Porygon so I had the artist sketch one. You can probably do a better one than this, like a full color one though.

You can try a Scryfall search for art:hedron and it will show you cards that have that object in the art! Neon Dynasty Kamigawa also has a lot of cyber and advanced technology stuff. The above set suggestions are good too. Once you have an idea just try reaching out to the artist to see if they are sketching.

OMG! You really have everything!

Basic but really well done, it’s not easy to find something Porygon-related but this idea is great.

Edit: It’s also an Italian artist!!!

The day has come! The muk really went straight into my favourites, such an authentic looking one and as others have stated too it feels to have very very much Kusajima style, i wonder if they really used the platinum muk art as a base. But also some other excellent ones, really like the lore and storytelling of the clefable and magnemite in addition to the art ofc :raising_hands:

As promised, here’s part 2 of the March update.

Starting off, we have Nidorino and Nidorina on Counterbalance! I like how Rope Arrow colored the frames to match off their blue and pink colors.

Here’s Eric Velhagen with the classic Rhydon on a Horncaller’s Chant.

The following proofs are a series from Nene Thomas. She was one of MTG’s earliest artists, starting around Revised and Antiquities. Her proofs are very hard (and expensive) to find because she gave most of them away as business cards when she was younger. Thus, with the exception of Hurkyl’s Recall below, all of them are on misprinted blank MTG cards. Her style is very elegant, and she is also a Pokemon Go fan! I hope you enjoy these.

Svitri Scarzam swimming with Vaporeon. The detail is amazing!

Kabuto and Omanyte in the Underground River! I gave her their Skyridge cards as a reference.

Hurkyl’s Recall is the most famous of Nene’s cards, as it returns all artifacts to the opponent’s hand, making it a very powerful anti-artifact card. Here she is putting artifact Beldum back in its box.

For the actual Hurkyl’s Recall proof, she painted Hurkyl with an Eevee Pokemon. Hurkyl in MTG’s lore is a researcher, so here she’s researching what Eevee will evolve into.

Rounding up March, our friend Drew Tucker is back with something we haven’t seen before - front alters! This is when the artist modifies or redraws the art on the front of the card. Kind of like a schoolkid doodle, but professionally done! In fact, during the early days of MTG, front alters were by far more popular than artist proofs. Today however, only the artists from the ‘good ol days’ usually accept them.

High Tide altered with a Kyogre - I put the original art besides it so you can see.

I though the yellow robes of Exorcist reminded me of Drowzee, so I had it painted on the front lol.

Actually, these were the byproduct of my mistake, because I sent these proofs to Drew without specifying to draw on the back and not the front! However, he then proceeded to do two back drawings. Finally Wartortle is done!

With the addition of Wartortle btw, I can finally give you all a sneak preview of the first completed page of my binder.

If you’re curious, these are the Pokemon left that I have not yet commissioned anyone for:

  1. Kakuna
  2. Jigglypuff
  3. Wigglytuft
  4. Tentacool
  5. Kingler
  6. Lickitung
  7. Seaking
  8. Aerodactyl

Everything else is in progress! Hopefully I’ll be able to give you all another update in April.

It’s difficult to even find words for these since it feels like gem after gem after gem, not a single weaker card again and the details in most of them are unimaginable. My personal favourite from this batch might be rhydon but i question the choice every time i watch the other cards, especially eevee and all the details in it really want to take the top spot instead. Also the first completed page is a treat and i know especially when finished this will be a thread i’m returning so often to admire it, i’m still in awe how unique the idea is and how it couldn’t have been executed better. So few pokemon left from the original goal!

Amazing, every time.

Just curious about the process, if you can told us, you get these going to conventions and tournaments or you mostly contact the artist privately?

Always love seeing your updates, especially now that you’re nearly finished with the 151 & we get to see some completed page layouts! Such a unique and creative collection. Some of my faves are the Flareon by Gaboleps, Wheezing by Jared Threat, the duo by Jeanne D’Angelo, and Irina Nodsol’s Cubone.

Curious if you’re considering a way to display these where both front and back are visible? The curation of Pokemon with corresponding MTG characters is so clever!

Thanks! It’s a mix of both. If I go to a convention I can get 4-5 at once and it’s often done in one weekend. Some artists also only draw during conventions.

Doing at home however, has the benefit of usually higher quality. The artist has more time to work in a relaxed environment. However, sometimes I will be waiting for months and months lol.

And yes! Good point I’m trying to find a way to display both sides at once. I can’t really think of anything though, besides maybe putting a photocopy next to it. Maybe there’s a way with mirrors? Haha I’ll keep thinking.

If I may…because I’m trying to get a commission also…

But how much do they charge you for an artwork like that made during an event?

It really depends on the artist. Some you may just spend $100-200 for a quick sketch. If it’s oil painting it may take up to $400-600. They will have prices at their stand usually.

Thank you so much it’s exactly the price I’m working on.

I don’t know your feelings but thinking that one day I’ll be able to get a unique piece like that is really exciting, more than owning some really rare cards…

I recently saw a long video of one the most famous Italian MTG collectors of alters/oddities but I think when you’ll finish your project you won’t have nothing to envy, at least for the original idea you had.

Thanks! Yes ive basically replaced spending on rare Pokemon cards to do this instead. (Well maybe if i ever find a trainer deck A)… The world of MTG alters is big and some impressive collections are out there.

I do enjoy Pokemon autos as well. I just find MTG artists more accessible. Theres so much room for one’s input and creativity. I think you will like your commissioned pieces very much when you get it! Please post here when done, I’d love to see

Oh yes and if you are in Italy, you can try contacting Stefano Lari on facebook, he is am agent who handles many conventions in Italy if you cannot attend yourself.

Great!

For now I’ll keep this first Bulbasaur sketch done by my 3-years old daughter as reference!

Nice, it really captures it essence. Also, to be very honest I would guess it to be a Bulbasaur if I was asked to guess. So kudos to your daughter.

Cheers!
