My personal MtG x Pokemon crossover - got some Magic the Gathering artists to draw Pokemon versions of their cards!

I got a few more lately. Brian Snoddy helped me recreate a scene from one of the Pokemon movies, and I had a funny substitution done on Sneak Attack

These are again incredible, this probably isn’t a simple thing to keep going but i hope we’ll get more of these in future since it’s such an unique and wonderful concept of art

Wow, just wow. Seeing this thread for the first time today. The Atraxa and Sneak Attack pieces are amazing. Found my inspiration for the E4 art contest this year I think!

Here’s a few more to enjoy for the weekend:

Lucas Graciano with Mega Charizard X in more of a fantasy dragon stye.

Eugene Frost with a nice stained glass Charmeleon.

I really liked Mike Burns’ Dodrio eating cereal

That charmeleon is an absolute piece of art!

Happy Friday. A new piece - I always thought one of MtG’s tentpole villans, Elesh Norn, looked like Lusamine  So I commissioned Flavio Giron to draw her!

Do you give them direction or is everyone pretty much aware of pokemon and makes great choices?

That’s a great question! For the most part, I pick out a card that, flavor-wise is a match for the Pokemon I want and I give the artist a reference image of the Pokemon. A few of them do play Pokemon Go and are fans, but many are not familiar with Pokemon.

I do try to curate cards where I can envision a Pokémon somewhere in the scene, and not just randomly have them draw a Bulbasaur on the back of a Lightning Bolt etc. Sometimes I’ll just be opening a booster pack and think ‘this would be great for a commission’, then will look up the artist online and see if they take custom requests.

I am usually a bit vague with prompts. I find it’s more fun to not be too specific to give them some room for creativity. That way I can be surprised at the end. Some I do have a stronger vision so I will say things like ‘Mew in a bubble shield’ etc.

It’s also give and take because artists may not take a commission if your prompt is too difficult or it’s hard to draw within the space of a 2 x 3 card. Most artists also don’t show you a draft, since it’s a relatively cheap commission and they may be strapped for time. So, usually I pick a good card, tell them 3-4 words and hope for the best. Fantasy artists are inherently very creative people, so I’m hardly ever disappointed  !

Some good heavy hitters came in for the weekend!

First is this cool series from Tyler Crook and Jarel Threat. It’s vipers and gorgons, so of course we have Ekans and Arbok

I liked Eugene Frost’s stained glass Charmeleon a lot so also invited him to draw Venusaur.

I recently got a copy of Emerald Charm in a booster pack by complete chance. Hmm, doesn’t it remind you of something?

So of course, I couldn’t help but ask the artist, Greg Spalenka, to draw Staryu and Starmie.

Lastly, and my personal favorite, is this reimagining of Dandan as Magikarp by Drew Scott, one of the original 25 MTG artists during Alpha set! I really like how he blended Magikarp’s bright reds and faded it with deeper waters - it’s very realistic and gives the painting a foreboding air somehow.

If you’re curious, the Dandan card is famous in MTG for having its own subgame, known as Forgetful Fish, where both opponents draw from a single 80 card deck and Dandan is the only creature. Maybe someday I will play it with Magi-Dandan-karp :).

I’m several months late finding this thread, but I’m so glad I did! These are all amazing and it’s a brilliant idea! And I don’t even play MtG, haha.

Been a while since I updated; some good ones have come in, both for bw and color.

This one is Chill, a blue spell. I couldn’t help but picture a Seel and Dewgong swimming to cool the sword down, and Greg helped me with this.

Next we have some classics, Hypnotic Specter and Mox Jet, to represent the Gengar line. (Yeah, Gastly Haunter are their alternate shiny colors I guess )

I also got Dan Frazier to do a new set of moxes for starters generally. Eevee is on the back of an arcane signet, since it can make mana of any color

Other notables: this is a Lapras sketch on Underground Sea, a powerful dual land on the reserved list. It reminded me of Union Cave Friday Lapras. The artist , Rob Alexander, is also not super easy to commission, so I’m very happy with this one personally.

Nana Qi with a rendition of Sol Ring based on her cats and dogs secret lair.

Lord Xander is a popular commander. He has a villainous boss air so I made him a stand in for Giovanni.

Lastly is Gaboleps with a great reimagining of fire diamond with Flareon.

More will come soon!

E4 is home to so many amazing card collections, but I’d say you probably have the single most interesting collection on the whole forum. I’m loving every update!
