I don’t understand the hate for Gym Challenge and Heroes! I love those sets! Also I don’t know if they are overrated (Well at least not until recently anyway) as until maybe a year or so ago most of the holo’s aside from Charizard were reasonably priced.
If I had to pick one I would say Fossil. Even though I grew up with it and I love the set for nostalgic reasons the holos and rares are pretty bland aside from Dragonite and Aerodactyl. I really am not a fan of the Ditto from this set, I mean what is the background a upside down chess board?!
As for the Gym sets, I don’t like seeing artwork on cards that I have already seen before in strategy guides. I can completely understand why people would like those sets, but they just don’t fit my tastes.
I actually think the Team Rocket set has some of the best artwork in the game. Dark Magneton is one of the most beautiful cards in the TCG, in my opinion, and some of the non-holos like Dark Rapidash, Dark Dragonair and Dark Charmeleon are gorgeous.
What I think holds it back for many collectors (other than the fact that it represented the first time we didn’t see rookie cards) is that a lot of the holo cards in the set are of unpopular Pokemon (Weezing, Vileplume, Hypno, Golbat, Dugtrio, etc.).
Funny enough, I think Dark Charizard is actually one of the weakest artworks in the set.
Fossil Articuno is nice but still not that exciting, I prefer fossil Moltres but then I prefer Gym heroes Blaine’s Moltres and Rocket’s Moltres over the fossil one. But that’s just my taste! If everyone liked the same it would be boring
I really like Gym because it just feels like that did something a bit different to the other WOTC sets, and I like the Gym leader’s being on the cards as it reminds me so much of them from the games. I do feel the artwork has a bit more to it than some of the other early WOTC sets. If you look at the Japanese cards as well Sabrina’s Gengar with the tombstones in the background of the holo is one of the coolest artworks!
I disagree with both of you on Dark Magneton. It’s just looks like a piece of silver that was cut up by a Katana with all the scratching in the holo 99% of the copies have, also I was only talking about holos which is why I didn’t factor in Dark Rapdiash/Dragonair/etc
I do agree with you @Fireftw_TCG that Dark Charizard is brilliant though. I love the simple design and the menacing look of Charizard looking at us through the card
