Came here to say this. If I wanted the artwork, I’d buy the sets it originally came from. If I wanted the holo patterns, I’d buy some Pokemon stickers. Nothing good in this set.
I agree with your point on some of the best artwork in the game ,especially with some of the non-holo’s like Dark Eveeloutions, Dark Machoke, Abra, Dark Primeape, Dark Charmeleon, Dark Rapidash, Dark Golduck, and all the trainers.
Most overrated set IMO is Neo Destiny. The shinings are super OR.
4 months ago the answer would be hidden fates (rip the guy that paid 10,000 for the black label), but currently I think that Black and White are fairly over hyped among their collectors. The cards feel like actual garbage and a lot of the artwork hurts me to look at.
Skyridge. Honestly, I think the other E-series cards generally have better artwork overall (with exception to the Crystal cards). I’m also disappointed by the Anniversary set where they didn’t re-release certain cards with a Holo/Reverse Holo artwork (so badly wanted that Holo old-school Base Dragonair).
I can always tell that these “lol ereader overrated bad art bad sets!” comments come from people who
A. Have never owned these cards
B. Have clearly never even google searched these cards
C. Just ride the anti-hype train
D. All of the above
I’m with you on this one. Love the e-reader boarders on the holo cards. Just check out the holo lines going on in the boarders on the crystal cards you posted. What’s not to love? You forgot to post the beauty of the crystal Nidoking though. One of my favourite crystals
Also, speaking of overrated sets. I think the whole Neo era was pretty great but no doubt Destiny is way overhyped because of the shining cards. I think the artworks (and might be a small detail but also the set symbols) are much better on the other Neo sets. Genesis and Discovery receive too little love.
Before saying this, I just want to clarify that I grew up on the Pokemon TCG and I love every set from the first three generations.
But Jungle and Fossil, which seem to be exploding in price right now, are easily the most overrated for me. Jungle especially. Art-wise, they are relatively plain and lack a lot of character. There are some standouts, like Jungle Exeggutor, Jungle Flareon, Fossil Moltres, and Fossil Dragonite just to name a few. But a lot of these cards lack “pop”. They just kind of blend into the rest of the card. I’m thinking along the lines of Jungle Dodrio and Exeggcute, and Fossil Arbok and Shellder, just to name a few. They are very muted cards with not much in terms of detail/background. Just doesn’t suit my tastes. Money-wise, these cards were printed to death. Look up any 1st edition Holo from these sets and you’re bound to find a few dozen on eBay at a minimum at any given time. The same can’t be said for most other WotC sets. They lack the same nostalgia/original factor as Base Set, and they don’t possess the same elusivitity (relatively speaking) of other later WotC sets.
Read thread title, came here to post this. Was shocked to see it on page 1.
Did not expect to see this opinion. IMO the only reason base gets a pass is because of the shadowless to shadowed variant. I wish they did something similar and more noteworthy of a change between 1ed and unl than a stupid stamp. For viewing pleasure I honestly prefer the cleaner look of unlimited cards.
