Most overrated set?

I am currently collecting WOTC era cards in PSA 9s and 10s (mostly 9s). I am only really collecting cards with art that I really love because there are a lot of cards from fossil and jungle that are rather plain. I disagree that e-reader card art is overrated because a lot of the art to me is reminiscent of the Neo series. Almost like a version 2.0 of Neo. The only problem with e-reader cards is the thick yellow border, but that is offset by the great panel art. I am having a hard time thinking of any specific set that is truly overrated except for Legendary Collection…and Fossil and Jungle for right now. Other overrated sets would be a lot of modern sets like Sun and Moon and X and Y.

Might be worth mentioning that I don’t understand the hate towards the Gym sets posted earlier in this thread. I grew up with base as most people on this forum but for me the Gym sets are easily among my favourite. The artwork developed so much from the earlier sets. Much more detailed and “sharp” with some awesome holo cards. And I find the trainers being on there to be a cool feature. Kind of gives the pokemon a nice “belonging” to each gym leader. I can understand why these sets are slowly rising in price.

Most overrated sets:

LC
Base 2
Neo Destiny (has a lot of very nice cards but shouldn’t be worth so much more than the other Neo sets which are easily better)

Artwork wise, I am appalled that Destiny has been thrown into this conversation. Top to bottom, unreal artworks. What’s the gripe here on shinings? Charizard is too plump?

Eeveelutions
Light dragonair
Light wigglytuff
Light machoke
Vulpix
Growlithe

List goes on until the end of the set

Base set artwork is mediocre compared to most other sets, it’s amazing for nostalgia and some are good cards ( born 1989 )

Stopped collecting at dragon frontiers for years as the holo was Aweful and serious print lines put me off

Aslo black and white Pokemon was the worst generation… and what was going on with the blue border Japanese cards , not sure if they done the English cards like it

Favourite sets -
Neo destiny ( nostalgia, pulling a shining steelix )
Neo revelations ( buying the first pack and pulling a shining garados and being so confused as to why the word shining was on the card, seeing the triple three stars )

Underrated - Legendary Collection.
Only because everyone has been making fun of it for 2 years. Needs an underrated title to level things out a bit to where it actually is.

Overrated - EX Team Rocket Returns
Aside from coming out in a time when few cared about Pokemon TCG, the cards themselves are underwhelming. Especially the gold stars.

I don’t think SuMo and XY are overrated at all. People often toss them aside because they were the turning point when they started being printed into the ground. It will be while before people attach real value and nostalgia towards them.

You do have a good point. I am just thinking about how the chase cards in psa 10s are priced on the same order as 1st edition psa 9s and unlimited 10s. This could mean that the current sets are overvalued OR that the vintage ones are undervalued. Depends on how you view it.

I Think its a combination of newer cards being overpriced and older cards being underpriced. For example gx full arts of popular pokemon like blastoise go for like 30-40 dollars. While many psa 9 1st edition holos go for like 50-100 dollars. I don’t think psa 9 really should be much higher, but for the price of 1 1/2 new full arts psa 10 you should choose the older cards in my opinion.

I agree with this. I’m always hesitant to complain too much about the price because I know that we all want to see our cards accrue value and it is the nature of card collecting.

Also agree with others that have been promoting Dark Team Rocket Set. It will make it’s climb, along with Jessie & James

Most overrated; Original Team Rocket. Holo trainers, holo energy, and seems like every holo pulled is a Dark Weezing, Dark Golbat, or Dark Arbok. Dark Charizard is one of all my time favorites though.

And I really dislike Ex Unseen Forces because of the thousands of legendary dog gold stars that are out there.

really hard to say but if i had to choose it would be legenday collection just because its a reprint set. i do think it has the best booster box art out though. the colours look amazing.

Gym Challenger/Gym Heroes is even worse and that’s why I think it’s overrated. The Gym sets are just stock artwork pasted onto stock backgrounds. Holo patterns are generic, no fancy swirls or anything.

I think the reverses are awesome. Something unique that firework pattern. First that did reverses? The regular holo / non holo set is just reprint. Nothing special beside a few that are nice to see in the set. Like the holo Vaporeon and the promo mewtwo.

IMO I would say I’m not a huge fan of the expedition artwork, I think that’s Charizard worst artwork from the WOTC era idk about modern cards cause I’m not that interested in it. I just started collecting skyridge holos but I have heard it is overrated in the past. I’m in love with the artwork from aquapolis atm may not be a premium or w.e but the vibrant colors and how the pokemons are designed show a lot of personality, especially with the crystal cards.

Base set, jungle and fossil are a bit overrated to me. But I still appreciate them and at the end of the day it’s all opinions and demand so nothings overrated really. Neo and WOTC e-series sets have the best art and most nostalgia for me. This thread got me thinking we should do a pokemon set tier list and share those

Yeah I’m not a big fan of the holo expedition Charizard. However I think if the alternate non holo art had a holo form it would’ve been ace.

Hmm yea that would had been pretty dope I think of the big 3 Blastoise is the best in this set

The underwater shot one? Love that Blastoise, probably my favourite Blastoise artwork. They did a similar one for Feraligatr which I also love.
