Most overrated set?

Just want to get all your opinions on the most overrated set?

I’ll kick start the thread.

I feel skyridge has got to be the most overrated set out there for wotc.

Observing the artworks for the holos, they just don’t appeal to me so much. I am more fond of expedition and aquapolis. Does anyone else feel this way?

I agree with Skyridge but I think the market agrees as well, the individual cards themselves don’t have crazy premiums it is just the sealed booster box/packs.

I agree that skyridge is too overrated now.
I don’t know what the future brings for the eseries, same as base or it’s own pad. (Not talking about the crystals )
The artwork is not bad. I like the artwork. I really do. But the artwork is sometimes equal, less as those from the gym series and ex series.

That’s one of the reasons I’m in shock of Neo Discovery’s under-appreciation as the art work is both lush and stunning :3

Gym Heroes/Gym Challenge, they’ve just never done it for me

Gotta agree here. It’s mostly just bland Sugimori stock art on clip art backgrounds. I do love some of Nishida’s artwork in the two sets, but for the most part, the Gym sets are my least favorite sets in the WOTC era.

Highly unpopular opinion incoming: Every 1st Edition set except Base. You pay 3x to 4x the price to get literally the same card with a stamp of debatable aestethic.

I’ll see myself out.

For clarity are we talking about the artworks of a set or the current asking prices of sealed booster boxes? I think my answer would be dramatically different depending on what we are talking about it.

Majority of e series cards are blah.

Jungle and fossil are over rated as well.

For me, I’ve never liked having a trainer or gym leaders name before the Pokémon’s name.

This is the same reason I was never a fan of those two sets as well. I wouldnt go to say theyre overrated myself (as i dont think ive heard that before with them) but theyre definitely my least favored WOTC sets.

id also have to say I personally always thought as a whole base-fossil were a bit overrated as well (I know, this is a really unpopular opinion here) but I mean in terms of entirety. Base I only enjoyed a few cards artworks, same went for jungle and fossil, and I feel as time went on entire sets began to look more distinct and defined to where I enjoyed more cards overall and things to me seemed more put together (A good example is im just getting into the e series sets and I find the art is beautiful and some of my favorites now). Those first three sets will always hold a huge significance in my heart, but moving forward I find that Neo, Rocket, Southern Islands, and the E series really are my all time favorites that just shine to me.

Overrated in terms of a set that most people hype up but doesn’t live up to it…I’d have to say Base Set. Obviously it’s incredibly influential and iconic but when you get down to it there really isn’t much there besides the big 3 holos. Overall the artwork is not very good even compared to later WOTC sets, there are some great cards like Dragonair but I feel most of the enjoyment we get from Base isn’t from the cards and the artwork, it’s the idea of the first Pokemon card set. That still makes it a great set, but there’s a big disconnect between what people hype up Base as and what it actually offers.

Sword & Shield

I’d say these two wotc sets(if we’re talking about artwork when it comes to holos since they’re the most hyped cards) are overrated because pretty much anything labeled ‘wotc’ gets fawned over by a majority of the community. I still think they’re good sets on their own but don’t live up to the ‘wotc’ hype

Team rocket ~ pretty much carried by dark Charizard and dark blastoise, not including dark dragonite because I don’t think the art is actually all that good(light dragonite is way more appealing imo), the rest of the set is pretty meh

Gym heroes ~ Id say I like Erika’s Dragonair, Rockets scyther, Sabrina’s gengar, and both moltres are decent, but the rest of the set is average

The rest of the wotc sets are pretty great to me, whether we’re talking about them individually or under the label ‘wotc’

And if we’re talking about prices, obviously Skyridge sealed makes no sense in regards to the prices of the cards, but everyone knows that lol

Yeah? Im curious to hear your thoughts on this one. I always traditionally think that with modern sets is moreso hype for the playability of cards, which is usually justified by the player base of things as opposed to the collector side which I havent heard anyone really hyping that side of it up. Im excited for it in the former, as I do play as well as collect, but in the latter im indifferent to it.
