Logan Paul & Cryptozoo [Warning: drama]

Incoming: Scrooge-esque confrontation where three “spirits of collecting” confront LP in the night to show him the error of his ways.

:ghost: :ghost: :ghost:

For people with this amount of power/money/influence, I think the only thing that will change their ways is a decrease in power/money/influence. :upside_down_face:

We both know how unlikely it is that will come to pass, so let’s not abandon the ghosts-in-the-night plan just yet. I think we have a real chance there.

Ima be honest here, he and his brother haven’t done anything to seriously negatively effect me or my enjoyment of the hobby in the 2 years he’s been here. I don’t speak for everyone, but I do speak for myself in that regard. That being said, I didn’t like him before 2020 and I still don’t like him today. Its not worth it for me to get so personally attached to whether or not someone is genuine.

At the end of the day, this is a hobby centered around Pokémon cards. I don’t think anyone here or elsewhere has the authority or right to decide who can or can’t participate.

another L for cryptobros and nfts

My main investment here is that crypto further implodes. When will it die?

It’s scam central. And maybe we’re all smart enough to know that, but people are still getting conned every day.

One of my main concerns of Logan becoming the public face of Pokemon collecting was that people who don’t know anything about Pokemon card collecting would think the same way about the hobby that you think about crypto, once Logan would use it for scams.

“Pokemon cards? Isn’t that what this Paul guy used to scam his followers out of thousands?”

In that regard, I’m glad he went on and used crypto for his scams, probably because it’s easier to perform a scam with digital assets. Although I still suspect that the whole fake 1st Edition base box was another scam of which we don’t know the whole truth (yet).

tbf logan and other actors did use pokemon to inadvertently scam people out of thousands by helping to superficially pump up the market, which lead to people buying at inflated prices

it is so depressing to think about how many people bought at the highs because they didn’t know any better, or were just duped by the hype, and now have lost hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

i might also be bitter because i got back into the hobby in nov 2020 after buying a pack for my birthday without any knowledge of the logal paul boom. i just thought this is how much cards were now and didn’t think anything of it. luckily i didn’t buy too much at the time, but it sure would have been nice if cards were at their stable market price instead of the inflated price.

For real… i love pokemon TCG but now there is this disguisting scummy garbage layer of people that adds that bit of a bad taste to this hobby sometimes.

Yes but you can say that about any hobby. No one is telling you to listen to it. Ignore the noise and enjoy what you love man. Focus your energy on positive things that make you happy, bumps along the road will happen, but as long as you have good intentions and focus on your happiness, nothing that anyone will do in this hobby should alter your mindset on what you want to achieve.

People buying at the peak of 2020 weren’t scammed. It was just a massive wave of exposure/demand. There are numerous members here, myself included, who “bought at the peak”. We weren’t scammed. The same thing happened in 2016 with Pokémon go.

It depends under what circumstances you bought those cards and your “moral compass”.

If you bought because someone said “x” were going to go the moon and you bought from them then yeah, it is a scam. It’s on the buyer’s fault for not investigating, sure, but a scam nonetheless.

If you just went ahead on ebay and bought x card because you saw the hype, in that case it’s different (still buyers fault tho).

The argument seems to hinge on intention being 9/10ths the law. But what if I told someone to buy a card while expecting it to crash, but they ended up making money? I don’t think they would complain.

No one knows what will happen. There are some cards that are significantly higher than 2020 (admittedly not a huge number). There’s also no way of being certain what someone’s motivation is.

Maybe a good analogy would be stock market ‘gurus’. If someone blindly listens to them then we generally accept that they should have just done their own research before buying.

Final point is that the primary goal of cards/collectables isn’t to make money. If you come in with that attitude then yeah, it’s hard to have sympathy.

I personally think we tend to overstate the impact of Logan Paul versus the pandemic conditions itself. Pokémon benefitted immensely from people spending more time indoors, having more disposable income, and people revisiting old hobbies in a stressful time.

I think if you asked people what got them back into Pokémon or growing their collections in 2020, not many would say Logan Paul was the impetus.

I feel like his biggest impact was probably on Charizard hype and maybe producing more interest and exposure in high end cards like Illustrator. That’s hardly a saturating influence.

This is gatekeeping. If someone has an opinion a card will go up, and it doesn’t, that isn’t scamming. Whether that opinion is a clown youtuber, or a 5,000 word essay from seeking alpha, neither can predict the future. Sure the latter is more tame and grounded, but they are all opinions. Thousands of youtubers have hot takes on the market, they just don’t have the same exposure.

Also reading this thread makes sense why Logan will always be popular. The vitrail is so relentless he gets more credit for moving markets than he deserves. Other collectibles and hobbies were impacted by 2020 quarantine before Logan touched Pokemon. Is Logan responsible for the puzzle market exploding? Or the board game market erupting? Were those people scammed as well because they “bought at a peak”?

My granpa is like 80% of the reason why the puzzle market exploded (hes covered his old houses entire basement walls in completed puzzles, and now is working on his new houses garage. He didnt even know the market exploded tho… ignorance is bliss. I think my nana has him on a puzzle budget though. I went and had one of his favourite photos of the naval vessel HMCS Beacon Hill that he served on turned into a puzzle. Lot of ocean and sky, he probably hates me for it, takes a long time when all the pieces are the same colour. About LP lets be honest here for a second, his effect in what i collect was irrelevant, he never made much of a public splash in 2001-2016 promos and set cards, primarily japanese. Tyranitar prices been stable, high/rising , but stable. Base 1st kinda crazy but like you say, it was going to be crazy regardless, all LP did was bring more crazy people to crazy town and gave them specifics to be crazy about.
