It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that, effective immediately, MetaZoo Games will be closing and shutting down all operations.
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the community for the incredible 4 year run that we had. MetaZoo Games was started during the pandemic and provided a home and created a culture that revitalized the TCG industry, launching a new wave of card games that now number in the hundreds. I’m proud to have been part of that, and you should be too.
Unfortunately, that era has passed, and faced with logistical and product gridlocks, MetaZoo Games can no longer continue to exist in the current economic and collectibles markets. It is my hope that MetaZoo can continue on as an IP at some point in the future under new ownership, and I look forward to that day.
Special thanks to all MetaZoo artists and staff, both past and present, that made these past 4 years possible. The memories we created will be something we cherish for the rest of our lives.
More information will follow and be communicated via our discord channel when it becomes available.
Now is the time for me to start my own cryptid-based collectable card game. It’s just like MetaZoo except the card art isn’t skin-crawlingly ugly and the brand name doesn’t sound like a bestiality website.
I am definitely making light of an unfortunate situation. I know there were people who liked MZ and wanted the brand to succeed. While I have always been hard on MZ it’s really because I think the concept itself is killer. A card game based on cryptids and folklore is, unironically, my dream card game. I love this idea.
But I have personally hated everything they’ve done with what I feel was a winning concept. I consider everything about the brand a failure.
I also kind of share the sentiment in the farewell post that the IP might live on under new ownership, even though nobody owns the creatures their game is based on. I would love to see someone do something great with this idea though. Maybe that time can still come.
But the product that exists is just… unfortunate. I think everything about this brand is unfortunate.
Just like the dozens and dozens of other TCGs that came out in the 1990s and early 2000s. The 3-5 year stretch is the hardest for any TCG. Usually if they can persist beyond that, they’re going to be around for a long time.
Yeah … I don’t know anything about metazoo or cryptids but I saw some of the watercolor art at the launch and I thought it looked nice.
I aslo think the mechanics were goofy. Like “you must have an American flag within eyesight to play this card”.
That doesn’t translate well for playing
