Lillie 397/SM-P Extra Battle Day Promo is up for Auction

Okay, but where is the evidence? You’re so confident about this, but I seriously can’t figure out why… If I am blatantly wrong, please enlighten me!

I think it’s very simple if you can understand there are entirely innocent reasons and entirely perverse reasons to collect these cards. Whether you focus on one reason or the other is whether you think it’s culture or creepy. It can be both.

Seems like I gave you guys the wrong idea. I am NOT DENYING that sexualization of waifus is a thing in Japan. I am simply putting my doubts on the effects it has on the Pokemon waifu market.

This card is now dodge central. Talk about an unclean auction with what’s already come out.

So you agree that sexualization of Waifus is a thing but cannot rationalize that it could spill over into the Pokemon waifu card market?

Its definitely a combination of factors that is causing this rise and its catching more heat as these cards have stonked either due to organic demand/market manipulation/lottery boxes. Or maybe a mixture of all

Yes, I can rationalize it. But as far as I can tell, no one has provided any proof yet. I apologise for being so stubborn about this, but I feel like conclusions are being drawn without evidence here…

Search “lillie pokemon orica” on google image

Maybe I’m not explaining myself right… This was a weird stand for me to take anyway, so I’m done. I’m not defending or denying anything you guys are claiming, I was just asking for some proof or evidence that this ‘‘sexualizing waifus’’ has an effect on the Pokemon market. But I’ll let it go, and I apologise if I came off the wrong way!

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the term “waifu” a sexualization in itself? It implies that you would want to make the character your wife or the character is wife material. If that doesn’t imply a romantic/sexual relationship I must be misunderstanding this whole conversation.

I am not criticizing anyone’s collection or trying to tell them what to collect. I just think that there is no denying that this “waifu” craze towards drawings/characters that are underage is a bit off-putting. However, I kind of understand that its hard to associate an “age” with a drawing/art of a fictional character where the only thing to indicate age is a wiki page or something. Honestly if they didn’t mention at the beginning of the anime series that Ash was 10, he could’ve been 20 and I wouldn’t know or care.
Just my opinion.

Waifu is not actually a Japanese term – it was invented by Western otaku. Japanese don’t use it. They sometimes use “yome” which literally means wife, but just as waifu it is more often used in humorous contexts, though there may be exceptions.

So I’ve seen “Moe” thrown about a few times both here and in the previous thread, I’m not sure if it’s an attempt to justify waifu obsession based on cultural grounds, but if it is then sorry but I take further issue with this when we explore “Moe” a bit further within the same Wikipedia article:

In addition, its link to Neoteny makes it even more suspect. I wasn’t familiar with the phrase before reading the article, but I am now. And it’s not a rabbit hole I plan on exploring any further.

I’ll take “Things I wasn’t expecting to learn on E4 today” for 800, Alex

What sort of evidence would satisfy you? You can’t acquire empirical proof about why people are purchasing cards. No one is admitting that they bought a Lillie because they find her attractive, even if you tried to gather the data from every buyer.

I have recently started collecting kotobukiya figures of trainers I like. There are third party studios that make different trainers then are currently in production with kotobukiya in the same scale. They are predominantly female and include a Lillie in bikini. I never completed the game or watched the sumo anime so not sure whether she ever appeared in one but they is clearly a demand.

It’s also weird as I feel like I need to justify that I own a May figure because of her Torchic rather then she is a girl.

Don’t worry it’s Pokémon forum and it’sa discussion.

We don’t need to talk in circles. All of these arguments have already been said on this thread. e4 is clearly split on the topic of waifus, so let’s just leave it at that and pray to god that something more interesting comes around soon.

Like this is wild to me. How is that three modern cards are so expensive?

Putting aside all the arguments in this thread, I just want an explanation from some of the trainer collectors here as to why specifically (obvious market manipulation aside), someone would want to pay $100k for THIS card. It’s not old, it’s not that rare and it’s easy to get mint.

Just some evidence to back up @pokecollectoramy’s statements.
