First, I have to say that play mew is a great choice lol, so I’m not the only one to make @Dyl angry!
This is still really funny to me, since it almost seems that people are either team “sunset mew” (me of course) or team “nishida mew”
Then, regarding my least favorite artwork(s) I would say these two:
I don’t know if disliking amazing rares is another unpopular opinion, but I’ve never loved how they look + the 5ban art is definitely on the stiff/bland side.
.
Honestly Kirlia has generally pretty decent arts, but this here seems just weird anatomically around the head - mouth. Not the worst thing but I’m not a fan.
Least favorites for the Fennekin and Popplio lines. These fuckers barely get anything to begin with so the fact that these shitters are part of their TCG line up really sucks lol.
As you can tell I really hate it when official stock artwork is just lazily reused and slapped on a generic background. At least with shitty CGI cards, someone took the time out of their day to model and pose the damn Pokemon, maybe even come up with a background for it.
Can’t decide on a single “worst”, but Himeno definitely has one of my favorites and also one of my least favorites… Let’s just say I didn’t even consider getting this signed in Charlotte LOL
Slightly polarizing and triggering for some, but aside from the obvious historical significance, I’ve never been a fan of Sugimori’s bare bones illustrations. I think I’d like them more if the backgrounds were more involved. However, when you’re the first one drawing these Pokemon it’s hard to produce dynamic card art when your work will be the building blocks for future artists to reference down the line.
5ban’s 3D renderings are also always off-putting to look at for me. I don’t think it’s abhorrent artwork, just a bit lazy. We are lucky to have hundreds of active artists for the TCG nowadays and we don’t see these as often as we did in the BW/XY era, so for that I am grateful.
Ironically Arita let me down here lol. I don’t understand the background, the angle doesn’t really work, and why’s Gyarados neck so thick. Either way, there’s plenty of cgi cards that might be worse tbh.
It has come to my attention that you have published disparaging remarks about the masterful work of the artist Yuka Morii. Please be aware that this makes you a mortal enemy of mine, and that I will henceforth be doing everything in my power to stand against you and all you hope to achieve.
Kind regards,
Llyr
I do not disagree on the Raichu not being her best, though. It’s an odd angle for sure.
This reminds me of Naoyo Kimura’s brief dip in quality experimenting with digital art around the same time;
Maybe I’m in the mood for unpopular opinions these days lol, but… I kinda like this leafeon?
Sure, definitely not the best especially in today standards, but considering it’s a promotional/booster pack artwork, imho it matches other similar art in vibe & aesthetic, doing better than the average stock material in the dp-pt era.
So yeah, just my thoughts of course!
I think I would have picked up this among the others, seeing that art on the store shelves back in the days:
BREAK and Detective Pikachu cards are too easy to toss to the bottom. The others aren’t horrible (decent layouts but poor/dated execution) but something had to be down there.
For some (probably geometric) reason, most Regirocks look like shit whilst Regice and Registeel have almost no bad cards. In sprite and Sugimori land they’re 11/10 all the time. Chose this rock because, aside from being hideous, it literally looks hairy.
The Kabutops is one of the absolute worst Aritas. It looks like he’s wearing jeans and the bullnose face is horrible. Pound for pound it probably isn’t the worst Kabutops, but whereas I expect nothing from the likes of Nagasawa, this is an Arita!
Yes, I totally agree on this one! I’ve always had problems understanding where the lower part of the body was, considering also the huge head.
It definitely looks like a primordial crab abomination, but not in a good way.
