Gold Star and Neo Shining Price Tracker

Disclaimer: I do own one of these.

It has been a while since we had a public sale of a Japanese Charizard Gold Star PSA 10 1st Ed. Congrats to the seller @evaner. 30,000 EUR is about 34,250 USD for those too lazy to convert

If we look at what 9s have been selling for very recently (8-9k USD), this PSA 10 price is pretty in line with the price ratio between 9/10 we were seeing at the start of the year. Seems fair.

I noticed a second 8.5 sold for similar money again. One to keep an eye on. Also he doesn’t confirm all sales even when paid.

Thank you! I have had similar offers for my second copy too, the demand is far stronger than the availability nowadays and very rarely do these sales make it to the public. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next one is higher.

I don’t know if it’s the right time to sell my duplicates. I have a 1st PSA 9 jpn Charizard GS, a PSA 6 1st jpn GS Ray, a PSA 5 Ray GS Eng, and a PSA 6 Unlimited jpn Charizard GS.

Good idea or not?

If you want to let go of your duplicate gold stars I would say go for it. If you’re looking to sell with someone Z&G emporium seems to be breaking sale records left and right with a lot of confirmed paid sales.

It’s making sense Japanese gold stars are getting more expensive since English is getting bonkers out of budget for collectors atm

Thanks for the tip! I’ve never tried Z&G as a consignment service before. I have bought a lot of cards through Z&G, so I’ll give them a chance.

They’re deluding themselves.

This is not a serious, rational market. Folks out here genuinely believing their washing machine condition PSA 2 GS Mew or Latios is a future Mantle Rookie card, despite the fact that I can go on eBay right this very minute and find multitudes of every gold star in various conditions in both english or japanese.

It honestly lends further credibility to the idea that it’s just ā€œinvestor broā€ types just passing the ball back and forth until they get bored and walk off the field. I would just find it hard to believe that many long-term hobbyists with curated collections are buying junk condition cards at these price points.

you know what though?
some of these japanese gold stars are truly rare
I was looking for a torchic last week. I was dumbfounded that none were available for sale on ebay. zero singles. zero psa cgc beckett. none

I check out the psa pop report. Only 254 samples ever graded over 21 years. Thats total population. And you have to imagine of the 254 how many of these are regrades? And how many will sit in Japan never to see US soil?

Case in point, some of these gold stars are more rare than realized. Japanese is still underpriced imho

Yeah, I edited my post to say ā€œor japaneseā€ instead of ā€œand japanese,ā€ because it’s true that there’s variability with certain cards.

The actual, true value of both english and japanese GS’s are most likely comparable. Japanese probably has a little room to grow, and English is in for a rude awakening.

Plenty of low grade raw available in the Japanese market now awaiting export to the USA through middleman services.

English GS prices will come down I’m sure at some point .. hopefully lol

A rude awakening ? I don’t think so.

Sounds like the kind of talk that most people were saying during the pandemic for the big chasers like 1st Ed Charizard and the prices that made history then stabilized the prices we saw later since pre pandemic they were going for much much much cheaper lol

I think what we see now is and will make the god stars more in price yes , but the prices we see now ? Nah

Prices more than what they were before this huge price increase boom for gold stars ? Yes.

Psa 9 ray was going for 8-10k ( 10k is you had new cert , clean copy and swirl lol ) back in 2024

No way it’s going down to that again

People know how rare English gold stars are , how low they were printed and how hard they are to pull and now find in mint conditions

I’m not including all the gold stars in this though , I can’t see the Regis , the 3 beasts ect not falling hard from what they are selling for now , the bigger cards those most likely won’t be hit hard in a rude awakening prediction

The beauty/curse of Pokemon is that we must ā€œcatch them allā€ so low tier gold stars will always be hunted by master set builders.

I’ll gloss over the fact that you put my Regis in with the stolen unseen doggos though

You make a point , all the GS cards will be wanted even the doggos and elemental braille thinga ma jigs :eyes:

I believe that GS Ray and Zard are the exceptions, not the rule. Those are bona fide holy grails.

Like, do we really believe that a CGC 10 GS Mudkip is now magically worth 14K when the same exact card sold for 4K just earlier this year? Let’s be pragmatic here.

Team rocket returns gold stars were the first and people have a fondness for starters.

Plus TRR and DX have the worst English print quality ever so it makes high grades very collectable. That specific mudkip was being hunted by one guy on IG offering a 2k bounty (yes half of what it sold for last time) so I suspect he got carried away.

I’m all for TRR gold stars being above charizard though. But that’s due to my fondness for hoenn Pokemon beating out kanto Pokemon on their home turf

You don’t make any money unless you sell. Would you like to capitalize on unbelievable and irrational prices? You should probably sell now, because there isn’t a massive amount of people to buy this LARGE supply of cards. It is a small supply compared to WotC sure, but these are not cards printed in the thousands, they are mass printed. Looking at PSA pop is a terrible way of determining their availability, and the longer you hold your bag the longer you allow the people who are throwing money without thought to run out or move on to the next thing

Because this is pokemon and we all have an incredible emotional attachment to it irrationality comes easy. Say I’m wrong and the price just keeps going, a PSA 5 GS is worth 20k. Is it better to hold out and make a bit more, or just lock in your explosive gains now and reinvest while interest rates and safe money are still great. It sure could easily go the other way

While it’s hard to say if this is a trend or bubble we have to take into account one consideration not being mentioned.
Millions more people have poured into the hobby and the gold stars are among the most iconic cards Pokemon have ever made. Almost everyone would like to own them.. but the population of the cards is staying the same (essentially) yes there are box breaks here and there, but if something is pulled the person pulling it will want top dollar for their high quality new certs especially after paying a fortune to open packs. Otherwise, pop is staying essentially the same while millions are pouring into the hobby

This could be a large piece of the pandemonium. Buyers wanting to get a piece of the pie before its too late. It’s almost like housing a few years back when buyers were panicking and offering over ask on houses and still getting turned down. The sellers have the cards here (literally)
If I told you there were 4,000 GS zards floating around the world that might sound like a high pop, but when you consider how iconic he is on top of the desirability of Gold Stars suddenly that number sounds like a nothing burger compared to millions of collectors.
and even if 99% of the people are priced out, 1% or even 0.5% of a few million people is still a large number. These sales keep happening and are getting paid for

A crash wont just come out of the blue. First we need to see price stability. Then at the first hint of price retrace there needs to be panic from holders scared we hit the top and suddenly oversupply to the market leading to a crash. This process will take a while to play out

Besides the eBay solds and other auction houses that show sold data yet we can’t confirm paid , these sales that keep happening seem to be a lot of instagram posts saying sold for yada yada but it’s all a trust thing

I get it but when I see ZG report on his socials that they have been paid for I believe him. Especially since the items he sells are not his and the owner can be like okay… you’ve been paid so where is my money lol

well they havent gotten any rarer in the last 4 years and anyone couldve picked them up any time they wanted for like 1/5th of the current prices
