eBay Garbage

Or is it ?!? Sent him (below) a message saying; Or you can learn to read

lol that’s a stretch. code card is right there in the pic + title. Guess you just need to put a pic of the code card only there?

I think you’re absolutely forward enough in your title and people are being idiots. Thing is though if I’ve learned anything from working retail years ago working in product design, there are a lot of idiots out there that pull stuff like this and blame the company rather than themselves.

You could potentially start the listing with ONLINE CODE ONLY or something that might cut down on this? Sucks that people don’t just read the whole title…

@vanillaluxury Not your fault. The truth is that a lot of people have no idea what these card codes are. And I mean not even an inkling of awareness that there are digital cards or a digital card game. It would be just a surprise to them if you mailed them a version of the card made out of chocolate — they are making this mistake because they are only learning these things exist when they accidentally buy them. It never occurs to them the card might be anything other than a normal card because as far as they know that is the only thing that exists.

Someone with this persistent misunderstanding is prone to making assumptions they don’t even realize they’re making. And when they get burned, the realization they made a mistake is steeped in denial that it was actually their error. They MUST blame the seller for TRICKING THEM in to buying something they never even HEARD OF. Very irresponsible of the seller to do that./s

These are the same people who are highly vulnerable to buying fakes and proxies and thinking they’re the real thing. In a hobby like this you have to learn not to take things for granted. Hopefully these people will learn that now. It’s too bad it’s so inconvenient for everyone involved.

Bought a cool lot of gold cards (various secret rares) off Ebay, seller shipped it amazingly with the exception he or she decided the cards didn’t need sleeves inside their toploaders… haha gotta love it.

I don’t really care about this, since it’s a matter of cents, but it’s something I’ve noticed over time and always wondered about. Why is eBay charging me more to ship the Meganium than the Magmar? They’re the exact same category/specs in the listing, they weigh the exact same, they’ll be packaged the same way, and (even per eBay) I’m using the same exact shipping option. There’s no insurance, so the value of the contents shouldn’t factor into the price of the shipping.

Like, shipping a $35 card via USPS is not more expensive than shipping a $25 card. USPS would charge the exact same if I went into the P.O. What’s the deal here? Is eBay pocketing the money? Again, it’s negligible, but I’m honestly just curious.

The distance the package needs to travel is also factored into the price, if the packages are going to separate places that’s likely what’s causing the price gap.

Like @augustdifirenze said, it cost them more to ship across the country then to the state right next to you, so they charge more depending on the distance to the package destination.

Huh, interesting. I thought the cost of a first class package was based entirely on size/weight metrics. So if I went into the post office and had them mail two packages, the cost would be different based on which state they’re going to? After so many years of selling/trading (having shipped many packages in person at the P.O.) I feel like I would have noticed that, but it’s possible that I never have because it’s such a negligible amount.

It might be different if you buy postage at retail. They might be more sensitive to that difference since you are already getting a discount buying postage online.

It was literally sent yesterday with free postage…

Did you send the item(s) out same day they paid as well? If so that’s absurd haha.

I think it was like next day because it was a late order, so still kind of crazy to me lol. Free shipping and no tracking so I’m the lucky one who gets to eat a £10 loss for no reason if the buyer decides 2 days is too long

Oof, I don’t have experience with a buyer like this before but I imagine eBay would be on your side in this instance? What they’re demanding is not feasible.

The buyer can’t issue an item not received case until after the expected delivery date. I can’t imagine that date would be within 2 days of purchase.

I’ve bitched about this before and I’ll probably bitch about it again, but it’s wildly annoying when sellers won’t provide a subjective condition description on raw listings and only say “refer to pictures for condition.” I do a lot more selling than buying, and I always give a condition estimate on every single card. Not doing so is a very transparent attempt to avoid liability, and it always strikes me as vaguely suspicious because we all know damn well how easy it is to conceal damage in photos.

Sometime last fall, I bought an Expedition Charizard for ~$400. Reviewed the photos and it looked near mint, but prior to purchase I messaged the seller to clarify that there was no significant damage on the card (specifically asked about creases or dents). The seller confirmed that there were no creases or dents. Of course, the card shows up and there’s a fat crease that was concealed by the lighting in the photos. Was able to return it because I insisted on verbal confirmation from the seller that no damage was present. I will *never* but anything from a seller who refuses to give a subjective condition estimate.

I’ve noticed this is the norm with Japanese sellers. They advise you to just refer to the photos and include some sort of compulsive language about how condition is subjective. They will also tell you not to bid if you are concerned about condition, especially on Yahoo Japan. I wonder if there is some sort of formulaic template they use because many listings on Yahoo Japan machine translate to something like “those concerned about condition should not bid” - I’ve actually taken the chance a couple times on cards that carried that warning and been happy with the result both times. It seems so random.

I don’t mind being advised to review the photos before bidding/buying, especially if there are numerous clear photos showcasing the complete surface of the card and its features. But often “please review the photos” are coupled with insufficient photos to make that decision.

They know what they are doing. Always avoid them.

My favorite machine translation I’ve gotten from a listing is this one. Makes me laugh every single time.
