What’s your process for making these? I.e. Photoshop composites or all completely redrawn

I’d like to learn how to draw ukiyoe style illustrations in procreate someday

I use procreate. The card was to small for the background. So I „redrew“ the Pokemon in a new layer. Then I took many parts from the background for the colouring and rearranged them in separate layers. And of course I had to remove the bird that was in the original.

I am sure there are more effective and faster ways to do this. I am still learning.

Beautiful work!

For anyone who didn’t know, the cramorant card is based on a piece by Utagawa Hiroshige, one of my top three artists from that period!

:star_struck: thanks for letting us know! Makes sense that there was already an original.

‘Into the Wonderball” My process. I usually wait until the contest is over, but close enough. I will be working away from good cyber communication next week so here it is a day early.

I really wanted to try the 3D category for e4 art contest. I wanted to do more than use stagnate assets. Similar to @bbobrob and others, last year I opened Blender and quickly decided it was too much to learn. This year I was determined. I had an idea and wanted to see it through. I asked our ArtContest mods for clarification on what was allowed. Sought the advise of OG’s like @decoypalmette and began.

Learning the 3D medium

To learn Blender I did the most used tutorial Blender Guru. I created a doughnut as seen in my final piece! It was a challenge and I am super proud I stuck with it. The curve was steep, but once it clicked,it was fun! I had a really good time playing with the medium. However, it probably was a process I could have skipped because later I found a better tutorial for what I wanted to do. This one. 3D Pokemon in Blender. It is an older tutorial but I highly recommend it. That one was amazing and helped me learn how to fix, and manipulate the models.. since I had a basic understanding of how to use Blender from my doughnut creation. I was now on my way to completing my vision.

Downloading and working the models.

The models I used were from 3Ds recommended by @decoypalmette . Here are a few of the models as originally downloaded.

Each model uploaded had to be repaired so that all the parts were correct. Then I could pose them. It took some trial and error. I actually had fun putting them in odd positions. This was my ‘evil mime’

I knew my composition and where I wanted the light. I created a box for each model to light each in Blender using the same type and direction for the light. Once posed and lit,. I rendered the models, saved as jpg. I then downloaded each image into procreate. I needed so use the snap tool to cut out each model from its background. There may have been a way to do this when I rendered them in Blender , but I didn’t learn what that was.

Working in Procreate

I have been using Procreate a few years now. So this is where I was most comfortable. Each final model was placed in my scene. I wanted Lillie to be further away but was sticking close to the rules “#3*. You are allowed to include multiple Pokemon in your illustration—the sky is the limit! However, one must be the focal point, or main subject of the artwork.*” I ended up happy with her as my focus. The background was from this asset

I edited out Ash and Pika then blurred it. Added my trees and some addition textures. The most fun was adding the Wonderland elements. The watch, the notes, the pipe for caterpie! The hardest part at this stage was limiting Pokémon. I had so many that fit into this world. The number of Pokémon options for Tweddle Dee and Dum were astounding. I was fully torn over which should be the queen of harts, and I’m glad I didn’t have room. Though I would have really loved to add more of our mushroom flower Pokémon!

The inspiration to “Patience”

After creating my 3D entry and really focusing on a new type of art for me, my creativity was low. Then I stumbled across this in one of my hikes.

A spider bridge.. This was the top of my hike

Well the inspiration was there. I did play with fog but decided to go with my favorite time of day here on the US east coast. Sunrise. I just needed the right spider Pokémon to create the bridge. Ariados was the obvious choice. Its Pokédex entry alludes to its determined nature in entrapping prey. Plus I’m a gen 2 fan. once I got going on the web I could have worked on it forever. It was an absolute joy to create.
