Disney Lorcana - Disney Trading Card Game coming 2023

Pretty much what I heard from the owner of my LGS today. I personally have never seen the hype in Lorcana and wouldn’t touch it especially since they are so anti-collector (I’m not one of those people who hopes for 1st edition or reserved list or super rare cards, but I understand how the modern TCG markets work) and it seems my suspicions are coming true. I would assume they will quickly change their ways, but if they continue as is, I do not see this TCG being long term successful.

Also, I am a Disney fan, grew up watching all the movies, but I could give a shit less about having a card with mickey mouse on it.

How is Lorcana anti-collector?

My mouth dropped when i saw that all Lorcana product came without a plastic wrap/seal of any kind. Straight from distribution and they look like this

How do you even ship product like this? How people are buying it to collect it “sealed”?

Can you explain to me why they are pro collector??

You’re the one who said they aren’t and I am just curious why lol

Off the top of my head.

They have mentioned they intend to do a bunch of reprints.

They have said they don’t want any cards to be to limited or inaccessible to players. So unlikely for anything truely rare to release.

They didnt bother to seal the boxes to protect agaisnt scammers who may be able to weigh packs etc.

Im curious to see how this holds up in a yesr or 2 when more supply becomes avaliable.

Maybe we’re coming from different angles, but I view some of these as very pro-collector.

Bunch of reprints? Great. Print to demand. True collectors collect for the enjoyment, not as an investment or to flip in a year or two.

Unlikely for anything truly rare to release? Great. You remember when you first got into Pokemon? Was there anything “truly rare”? Was a lot of fun to rip packs though. That was collecting at its best. Nothing against secret rares, serialized cards, etc. but from a pure fun angle, this is the best way imo at least for casual collectors, kids, etc. Pretty much everyone except the whales.

I do agree on the fact it’s crazy there’s no seal on these. Sadly we live in a world where some scumbag will weigh packs or look inside and reseal.

I see, but all TCGs reprint though? And Pokemon printed 9.7b cards last year and 2 years of 9b+ cards - even if most are bulk, that’s probably the most of all TCGs by a large margin.

Those Enchanted cards are 1 in a case right? Or maybe worse odds, not sure. That’s kind of limited, no? And the fact that they only have 1 holo slot for 200 cards does make the holos have some kind of exclusivity.

Unlike Pokemon, every other TCG has to lean into the game aspect because none of their IP - even Disney - is strong enough to cruise on collectors.

I was thinking that only having 1 holo slot and then a jump up to Enchanted cards would be the reason it was less collectible because there really is no difference between Common up to Legendary since there is no change in foil pattern or any foil whatsoever, just a symbol change. Yeah they are printed less, but no one in Pokemon cared or cares about non-holo rares.

I’m not sure how it compares to Magic and other TCG tiers though. I think it’s meant to emulate that more than Pokemon anyway.

I’m not sure how this resolves the problem. Couldn’t people open boxes, weigh the packs, pick out the pack with the Enchanted rare, replace that pack, and close the box up? Not adding a seal would encourage this behavior.

Personally i wish all companies would seal boxes like Metazoo with different seals for each set to make it harder for a scammer to reseal boxes into the future.

I cant see boxes having long term growth if they arnt sealed and eay to tamperwith

I cancelled my pre order for my case, thanks guys lol

Samw here but they have some nostalgic stuff out there. I bought this Japanese Vinyl “Funko” that looked like a vintage Mickey Mouse but that’s literally all i have when it comes to Disney

Thoughts on this now that it’s been released? Are you collecting or playing?

I think most people with a brain are being quite cautious. Lorcana has done nothing to instill confidence in its success and longevity.

You can collect/play the game though without thinking too much about its success and longevity…

I opened a booster box and very much enjoyed it, the cards look quite good imo. I’m not too sure about the future either but I don’t see a reason not to give it a shot either

I generally agree with you, but personally I have to believe in the product and its longevity to enjoy it. It’s the same reason why I had no interest in the Kakawow product either.

I hope that Ravensburger gets their sh*t together so that this card game can be played and collected.

So far I have opened a total of 6 booster packs on top of a starter deck for Lorcana. Currently from a collectability standpoint it seems like your typical trading card set filled with the usual rarities, alternate arts, ect. What I do personally enjoy is that each pack has essentially the reverse holo, but it’s a regular full holo of any card from the set. This is something I wish Pokemon would do as I am not a fan of reverse holos other than the EX era ones like FRLG.

I live out in the middle of nowhere and there is one card shop that only sells MTG singles along with Pokemon sealed, that I pretty much never go to because there are no Pokemon singles. However, for the first time since playing at the Pokemon League as a small child I have decided to put together a deck for a TCG as this place is running a league starting today.

The game seems pretty easy to learn although I feel like the rules have a few situational moments where I am still like ???. I have watched the developers play and have read the included rules and I still have had some questions in certain scenarios. Guess I’ll figure those out as I play more with others.

My plan for Lorcana falls under the collect what I like category and I plan on having only a small binder (probably 4 pocket) with my favorite Disney characters as foil cards. After playing for probably the next month or so I’ll decide whether or not I want to continue playing at a league event. I’m just excited for now at the idea of actually socializing with people at a table in a store. Also I am totally bringing my Pokemon trade binder JIC, ha!

Yup, i opened the starter packs too but the cards look nice but nothing jaw dropping. I went to an LCS here and they arent selling booster boxes but 2 packs per person for $14 a pack, which is crazy…

$14 a pack is nuts

The one you linked is purely a collectors item though, and not a very good looking one at that. Lorcana has decent artwork and is playable. I could open up their base set booster box 20 years from now and still enjoy it all the same.

Although I would be more inclined if the booster boxes were closer to msrp rather than like 300 dollars a booster box before I would want to jump into a brand new tcg.
