These do just not excite me. Obviously that’s just how I feel about it, I’m sure there are fans. I think it’s overall success will rely heavily on playability of the game
Were you a Disney kid? If you didn’t grow up with Disney, I can see why these would be uninteresting to you.
I was on the extreme end of the Disney spectrum.
I am a little excited for Lorcana. I’m not planning on opening up a lot of product but I’ll more than likely have a binder with just my favorite singles from franchises, characters, or artwork.
I have seen nearly all the classic films. Certain ones I watched over and over on VHS like Lion King, Aristocats, Pinocchio, Aladdin. I would say I am a fan of most of the classic animation movies but not to a crazy degree.
The natural comparison is to Pokemon. I think Pokemon captures something so unique. It’s a world that you exist in and you have an experience that’s similar to other people but entirely your own. Video games as a format just allow so much more agency. Whereas Disney dominates film which is a static media. The level of immersion is just entirely different.
I actually think the way they are designed is perfect for playability, which I understand that to be their main priority anyway.
I have a lot of engagement with Pokémon through the anime, so it doesn’t feel all that different to me when compared to Disney. I also played Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK) religiously when it came out nearly two decades ago, so I had a game connection to the Disney IPs as well. So what you wrote doesn’t really fit me at all, but I can see why there is a disconnect for you.
that tinker bell is pretty sick
same. its just not something i care to collect. cool to see tho
now if they print some destino (disney x dali collab) cards, i’m down
edit:
or donald duck mathemagic land
As someone who’s already played the game multiple times with proxies and the online simulator, I’m kind of happy there is no mega stonks crazy refractors or similar wild chase cards to begin with. Will make it easier for players to get hold of these beautiful arts for their decks. The Tinkerbell especially is a favourite of mine.
From what I’ve gathered is that there are 12 of these “Enchanted Rare” cards in the base set, and you pull one every 4-6 booster boxes on average.
If their word is worth anything, they won’t ever be doing anything super chase like or exclusive. @gemmintpokemon went as far as to say they claimed to be “anti-collector”. Personally, I agree with PokeRadar (in their vid below), that they’ll try hard not to make anything limited but if it’s not successful, they’ll quickly change:
EDIT: although it looks like they’re already going back on this. I see an exclusive gen con promo, a Germany promo in September, enchanted rares, etc
That is insane. Waifu craze moving to Lorcana?
i’d consider it if you took away 2 of those zeros, but still probably would pass
$4000.
Maybe people new to TCGs but are Disney fans are FOMO-ing.
Or it could just be fake.
yeah even at $40, i’d probably pass
So there are only 12 holo cards? Those Enchanted ones?
And the rest can be holo randomly like the Pokemon reverse holo.
Just saw a quick opening and whether the card is Common up to Legendary, there doesn’t seem to be any holo for them.
I would call myself a minor Disney fan (watched almost all the classic animated movies several times, watched a lot of the Lilo and Stitch TV series, etc.), and Lorcana doesn’t really excite me either.
I do think the cards look great though, and I’m glad they’re new artist renditions of Disney characters rather than screencaps or rejigged 3D models (for Frozen, for example). But I don’t have an urge to collect or own the cards.
I feel like Pokemon franchise is the exception. I enjoyed Digimon and Dragonball Z and played Magic as a kid and actively follow the One Piece manga, but I don’t care much for these TCGs. Maybe it’s because Pokemon marketed itself from its inception as a “collect them all” kind of thing? Also could be due to the multi-pronged approach of Pokemon for targeting kids (i.e. toys, games, anime, TCG). Who knows.
In the end, looks pretty cool, but not for me.
I’m so thankful for this too. This exact reason is why I dislike Weiss. Their IP collaborations are excellent, but the cards are just screencaps from the anime.
