Differences in the Shading of Shadowless Cards?

both of my 1st edition shadowless Alakazam cards differ slightly in shading. One is a thin and one is a thick stamp. I’m not 100% sure what caused the difference but as to which one is the “true” color doesn’t really mean much to me. The lighter shade looks more like my Japanese copies of the card for what it’s worth.

First post in awhile

Japanese cards have always had more consistent color rendering during their production so I suppose the cards printed by Media Factory were more consistently accurate to the original intent then most. Other than those there really isn’t a specific color that Blastoise is supposed to be (unless you are referring to Ken Sugimori’s original drawing). For example you can see they even changed the color of his shell between various releases. Variances the hue of the English Blastoises’ (including my PSA 9 copy above  ) could be attributed to contrast and white balance of each photo. From a production basis the English version often had differences in coloration due to minute differences between printers used at the time.

Took me a moment to find it but here is a thread with some helpful information. Cheers!

Oh wow thanks guys, clearly the color of the Shadowless cards is all over the place.

Just one more thing to love about the shadowless base set!

I’ve had trouble finding two alike lol.

Happens in a lot of sets

Whoops, I thought deleting the OP would delete the entire thread, but apparently not lol.

I found it best to delete this since the issue had been resolved (and had also been discussed in other threads before)

Interesting post though! I just noticed that my Dutch blastoise is lighter than the other language variants such as Chinese and German…I wonder if they were printed elsewhere?

Just at a different time. Settings and ink levels can affect it.
