Mostly the color of the label. Around the time of the change they also made their logo less blue. So the full blue labels are considered as old.
I generally consider anything pre-39x to be old cert. Most of those have the original label design that handschoen mentioned, though some don’t.
Too bad your overall returns weren’t that satisfying.
I just got a return of 33 cards, mostly Japanese Worlds cards.
And the grades in general were a lot better than I expected with many 10’s and 9.5’s overall.
Even upgraded 2 English Charizard Championships cards from PSA 8 to CGC 9 and 9.5!
And the best part was, no upcharges! I really hate upcharges…
I haven’t done many CGC to PsA crosses but I had a CGC with 9.5/9.5/9.5/10 subgrades just get quad 9.0s from BGS…
Which is wild because the centering is definitely closer to a 10 than it is to a 9. Pretty sure someone at BGS just hates their job.
Subgrades are not known for their consistency, they’re simply there to appeal to people who like subgrades
Well they directly impact the final grade lol. If they want to add the .5 I lost to my grade then sure.
Totally agree,
Here’s an example from my collection:
1st try
Was unhappy with the subgrades for edges so I submitted the card a 2nd time (about 1 week later):
womp womp
Going to crack an resubmit, can’t see why the corocoro didn’t get the 9, was the older CGC label too
More CGC → PSA crossing data!

Average CGC grade: 8.81
Average PSA grade: 9.32
+0.51
Funny enough, it’s exactly the same boost as my first order to 2 decimal places
OLD labels bumped higher than NEW but keep in mind, most of the NEW label category is dominated by the Rocket’s ex cards which are different from most others on this list because they are 1. English and 2. unlikely to 10 (the Mewtwo is clean though)
Where would be the best place to learn how to crack a CGC slab?
YouTube probably has a video or two.
There’s plenty of videos like this but it’s all the same mostly. use a wire cutter or similar tool to crack open the top right and then use a as flat head to prop it open. I always wear glasses and I try to put the slab in a ziplock or something so I don’t get little plastic pieces everywhere
I prefer to get the plastic shards in my eyes, much better than PSA shards because the CGC plastic is more clear
I’ve actually started using my battery powered portable bandsaw to cut the top 1/8" off then split it with a butter knife the rest of the way. No shards of plastic flying everywhere and no unwanted splinters/cracks spreading towards the card and potentially damaging it.
Thank you so much this helps out a ton - I really been trying to scan over this post and see the best way of going about buying slabs to crack. Hopefully I can get some luck and convert some over
I use wire cutters and a small glasses flat head screw driver. Takes me like 15 seconds tops to get a card out and I never have my case splinter. Top corners, pop the top seal, two side seals, pry the front away from the card.
Usually the people who get bad cracks down the middle are people using full sized blade screwdrivers or even larger objects. Where it’s giving them way more leverage than they need.
8.5 to 10 is quite extraordinary; what did you look for when submitting?
8 to 10, even better
