Base set is the safe option, everyone’s favourite set, almost a certainty to hold its value at the very least, and likely to give you a good profit if you hold for a few years
Expedition is riskier if you’re looking for pure profit, generally an underwhelming set with little/no nostalgia attached for most collectors, its scarcity is a plus
Base Set, unless you’re a true collector no one even thinks about Expedition. You have to keep in mind that there’s plenty of people whose lives don’t necessarily revolve around Pokemon but want to hang onto a sealed box for nostalgia’s sake.
There will always be 1000x the demand for a Base Box.
Scarcity just doesn’t mean much tbh. Expedition should be the correct answer, but I’d never bet against the Base Set. It really doesn’t matter if there’s 100 times the amount of Base vs Expedition boxes out there.
That being said, I don’t think one can go wrong with either box. There’s actually possibly more EV when it comes to Expedition as most holos bring good money in 10, but if you keep them sealed Base would be way more liquid.
I think you’re confusing scarcity with rarity. Scarcity is definitely important, when something is scarce it means there’s enough demand and could increase in value. Scarcity from demand is one of the biggest reasons why prices increase.
All I was saying is even if half of the demand for base set, headed to expedition, the prices will go up over night. I can find a base set box pretty much everyday of the week. Expedition on the other hand is becoming more difficult. Either way, for me I don’t buy boxes because they won’t last sealed in my possession.
I would take the Expedition booster box because I think that its value will increase more than the Unlimited Base Set booster box. An Expedition box gets harder and harder to find with the month.
Personally I would take the Base Box over the Expedition if it was an investment option. For the purposes of keeping sealed for my own collection, I could go either way. Would come down to which one looked in better condition
Expedition is the Red-Headed Stepchild of the WotC eSeries! Haha There is NOTHING EXCITING about that set; especially when you compare the sets before (Neo Revelation / Destiny with the Shining) and the sets after (Aquapolis / Skyridge with the Crystal). What does Expedition have going for it? It’s the first? That just doesn’t do it for me…
If you’re looking to purchase for your own collection though - without much regard to re-sale value; it’s completely up to you and what you personally prefer. However, if you’re looking to purchase as an “investment” - 100% Base Set! There will be a much larger pool of potential buyers for Base vs. Expedition - who even remembers Expedition from back in the day when it was first released?
I’ve recently gotten into selling PSA 10 Unlimited Base C. / Un. Cards. I started-out with a small-batch of 100 Cards - wasn’t sure how well they would sell, so I wanted to do a test-run. It’s been about three-months and I’m nearly sold-out - and these cards are selling between $25.00 and $30.00 / Ea. (For C. / Un. Cards)! There’s a lot of people going after the PSA 10 Unl. Base Set right now - cannot say the same abut PSA 10 Expedition C. / Un. Cards.
