Lol that seems a bit harsh, I think we all inherently hope that the collectibles we buy go up in value or at least retain the value they have. Would you spend $1000 on a piece of art if you thought there was a strong chance it would only be worth $10 in a couple years? Probably not. Like it or not valuation and the idea of “investment” is tied into every collectible market.
To answer the initial question, I’d go with 2 boxes of EX FRLG but only because I personally like the set better, amazing art and all of the EX cards are super solid. Plus if your intention is investing and they do happen to go up in value, maybe you could sell one down the road to make your money back and hold the other indefinitely! Although Expedition may be in shorter supply…
Yea maybe, but i can’t hold myself back when someone say “hold for a few years”. That means he wants to flip it to get money and don’t give a flying “f” for the hobby. He could just delete the last line to avoid it. And now expecting pro tips in here from Real life professor oaks.
Someone was going to bite, it was just a matter of who first lol. Hes just asking for some advice, no need to start another one of these argumentative threads, even if a decisive answer cant be given.
It doesn’t necessarily mean that, I think the lines between “Flipper”, “Investor”, and “Collector” are a lot more blurred than people tend to acknowledge. I know I personally fall under all three, as an asset I think cards are a lot more fun to hold than money, and even if I hold them my whole life as a pure collector, I’ll still consider them an asset. But I also flip some stuff because I’m a college student and it’s my only source of income. What if he’s holding the boxes with the intention to flip, but also intending to put the profit back into the hobby?
Also, I do give an f about this hobby and many others. I know my collecting style and I know I will probably trade and sell stuff I lose interest in, in a few years time. I was just trying to get some real time feedback…
Look at general board. This is his 2nd topic in 2 days, on the exact same thing but different boxes. Both topics with “Holding for a few years”. Sorry but i can’t stand this, i might have the Our honorable president dna in my replies. Just my opinion and i might take it to personal. Ill ignore next time and let a serious collector help him flipping instead
You are assuming a lot of things about this person. Who cares if their only two posts are investment questions? You can’t assume he has no other interest in the hobby just by what he doesn’t say or doesn’t post about.
Regardless, whats wrong with investors in the hobby? That’s a good thing. That means growth.
It may be your opinion about him that you don’t like his angle, but my opinion about you is that you are being an ass and have misdirected frustration.
Where did you come from, a flipper too?. You know how to escalate things even further. I’m glad you have an opinion of me, because i have absolutely nothing to say about you
I would go with the holy grail: PSA 8 1st edition Charizard base set. They go for about 2.5k. But really you should pick what you think you would like the most. My personal fav is frlg!
I get what you mean, but it’s people like him that help the hobby grow. I guess it’s like a double edged sword, he will help increase the value of certain product but also make things harder for collectors looking to get that product. I still think you’re being harsh, the only thing he’s guilty of is wanting people to tell him what to buy. That doesn’t make him a terrible person. Also if he plans to hold on to it for years he’s not a flipper.
@nanger9 You’re in a forum full of collectors not investors. There’s no one here to hold you by the hand and tell you what to buy. You need to do your own research and decide for yourself. As a collector I can say that I prefer FRLG.
