My point is people claim the designers are running out of ideas, but they put a lot into the design of most Pokemon. A lot of which isn’t obvious to non Japanese fans because much of it is inspired by Japanese folklore. If you don’t like the way the Pokemon looks, that is a subjective opinion. However, it’s simply wrong to say they’ve run out of ideas.
If you’re trying to cater to a global audience, but appreciating your design requires niche knowledge , it’s bad design. I don’t think they’ve run out of ideas. I just think their ideas are trash
I mean, that’s how Pokemon have always been. Most casual fans don’t know what a Gyarados, or a Jynx, or the Legendary Birds were inspired by. Hell, even pokemon like Golduck take inspiration from Japanese folklore. Some people simply dislike the newer designs, which is fine. Its the “running out of ideas” thing that irks me. And its not bad design to base your designs off of Japanese folklore if thats literally the origin of the franchise lol
Thank you for this. Just bought it. I just bought the base option and it came out to about $68 which includes priority shipping to my apt in Texas. Basically the same price as going into a target or w/e and buying it after tax. Plus I was going to have to buy the promo anyways and it’s currently like $50 on ebay (surely will drop after release)
People quick to judge the sprites of these new forms, but I guarantee a lot of these designs will grow on people once we get to see them in action/use them in game/see them in the TCG with amazing art. I welcome the new designs. Looking forward to experiencing them all
Can’t speak for everyone but with new releases I find two good designs for each bad one. I just find these underwhelming in general. That being said, I agree with what you said. They will grow on us and some 2D artwork will work wonders as well!
I’m really hoping they keep the pokedex to a limited number. While the notion of catch 'em all is central to the game… once it got over 500 I just kinda bailed. I’m a busy guy! heh.
hah yeah sword and shield was rough for the pokedex since you had to obtain everything to register it.
it also might be a big deal that its smaller because the leaks i’ve seen suggest you have to complete the pokedex before you can encounter/catch arceus. seems like a somewhat grindy game, but i think it’ll be more engaging than the typical pokemon game when it comes to “endgame”
I don’t know what to say. They were on a roll with the initial leaks. The Growlithe was cute. The Voltorb was fun. The Zoroark line was awesome. The adjustments made sense conceptually.
And then…pointy feet Dialga? Armless Palkia?
I dunno if this is a boomer opinion but the reason games like Colosseum, Mystery Dungeon, and Ranger left an impression on me was because they expanded the world of Pokémon and not necessarily the Pokémon themselves. Arceus designers may be trying too hard trying to reinvent these Pokémon that they end up looking dreadful. While I don’t have a Switch, watching my very cool Quilava evolve into a stoned-silly Typhlosion would take away from the experience for me. I would be completely fine with a game that featured zero new Pokémon and/or forms and focused solely on the lore and life of Pokémon. In fact, I’d probably prefer it over evolving my Sneasel into a…longer Sneasel.
there are a lot of interesting changes to stat distributions. honestly, the subtle changes to statuses seems like the biggest change to the battle experience. getting used to how different stuff like sleep is will be hard to adjust to and factor all of the nuances when making move choices.
