1st base Charizard psa 8 price evaluation?

I can confirm a private sale of $28k went through today

Anyone else think that most of these sales are to people outside the hobby or newbies that have money to just throw into it… Perhaps they even got bad advice from people like that guru collectibles nut.

I love the price increase, but I think people are overpaying for now at least. I do think the price should get there, but I think 20k is where an 8 should sit for a while if not a little less.

Edit: I will say that at this price, every PSA 8 should have it’s own personal evaluation as not all 8’s are the same condition and this is aside from Thick/Thin, which I also feel has been a tad overhyped by certain people.

Almost all my biggest sales lately have been from outsiders. Could be hype or could also be due to established collectors not being able to overcome their price memory.

Gray stamp may have given it a premium

I re-listed mine with an indent last night for 35, have a few 20k+ offers already but not sure what to actually take the way things are going though. This market doesn’t make sense anymore.

Everyone is saying this market “doesn’t make sense anymore” and in some ways, maybe that’s true.

But at the same time, the fundamental answer is clear - available supply at this moment in time simply cannot keep up with the insatiable demand at this moment in time.

And the people entering the hobby now are far more willing to spend big money in a way the collectors of the past were not because, in addition to desiring the actual card, they truly see it as making an investment.

I believed in pokemon from day one I mean its not that hard to believe if im being honest that pokemon would reach crazy heights, I mean it was pritty destined to be very trasnformative for itself and for markets in general I mean its a beast! just waitng to fully mature into an adult alongside its generation! if not pokemon what else?

Idk I feel like every 1st edition base charizard has been undervalued for a long time. And if a 10 is over $200k, an 8 is not that much different than a 10 aesthetically speaking. $25k + makes plenty of sense.

There is one currently on auction in the UK. It is currently at GBP 9,600.

Will be interesting to see what the final price is!

So I saw an old youtube video (circa 2009) of this kid who had some unveiling of his new mail arrival. Pulls out a PSA 8 Charizard 1st Ed. I’m thinking wow that’s great he got it so long ago so he didn’t have to break his bank. Then he drops it:

“I got it for $88 which is a great deal cause right now they are almost $200 on ebay which is way too much”

My jaw dropped to the floor. And detached. And rolled out the patio. And got run over by truck. And I didn’t even notice until hours after recovery.

Lmao he’s right $200 was too much. That’s over a 1:5 ratio of psa 8:10 value at the time. I paid $15 for a played copy in 2010 that I eventually graded a psa 4. Not a “steal” either, plain market value, was from a vendor at Regionals and no one else wanted it.

@qwachansey I know I KNOW!! Must you be so right!? ARGBLLAHHHHH

Hah but really wow. How far it has come. Love how matter of fact you were about it. It had me laughing!

@qwachansey 15 bucks jesus. It’s been a crazy 10 years. That’s a 400 - 500 fold increase

Lol it’s so crazy isn’t it. I purchased a PSA 7 shadowless zard after college (maybe 2010/2011?) for like $350ish and sold the next year for like $500-$600 just had no way in hell of ever believing it would sooooar to unbuyable points

@awsmofo, yeah I can’t believe it all. I balked at the price of that pretty little guy that is your avatar in 2013. We’re talking $50-75 for a NM-MT copy. So I walked away. Then 6 months ago I really realized they will run dry and all the collectors will have their copy. There will likely never be more than a few thousand higher 6+ grades. Nothing substantial at least. So I went and got one. I’m happy with it. Wasn’t insane. But now it actually is.

I feel like newcomers don’t know the prices of the past either. They just come in to the hobby and see the current prices. So they’re not in disbelief or have as much sticker shock as the rest of us do. R he rest of us see 1st ed base set zard psa 10 as going up 4x inside of a year and are flabbergasted. Newcomers see the price at around 200k and go “cool.” And then drop mad bills

Haha if only I had money in 2009 but I was still in high school so had no income. I bought an 8.5 for 8k 2 months ago. Recently was offered 35k. Unless I trade up to a 9 at a reasonable price, this ones off the market for a long ass time.

Haha, I had money in 2009, enough anyway to buy Pokemon cards, I just wish I had a brain. Instead all my money went on Poker. If I’d have spent the money I spent on Poker on Pokemon instead I could retire now!

See that’s the thing! In 2012 I bought 3 booster boxes. Base, jungle, fossil. Wanted to and did in fact open them all

But I saved up for that big time. And I just couldn’t drop another $400 on another base box. Confirmed shadowless were only like $100 to $200 more at the time. The fool I was. And I knew I wanted it but I just couldn’t afford it. Like you said, you had 8k to spend now. I could just about do the same thing. I would love to spend 8k on a shadowless box, hell even an unlimited. Damnit! We were too young!!! :slightly_frowning_face:
