It’s a mess, and it’s as much of a mess as the original theatrical version of the movie that was largely Joss Whedon’s.
I don’t know how Zack Snyder managed to convince himself and others that he is some amazing, subversive, provocative filmmaker. Maybe it’s because Watchmen was such an amazingly done movie and he managed to tap into something that matched up with the source material so well, but it’s difficult to not hit the mark when the source material is such a rich story and with such well developed characters and dialogue.
Man of Steel is a great movie, too. But I’d actually credit a lot of that to Christopher Nolan being mostly responsible for the writing of that movie.
Justice League/Zack Snyder’s Justice League are both disorganised, uneventful, and unearned movies that are too try-hard dark and serious but also manage to come off as goofy and silly at the same time. A lot of the Marvel movies are goofy and silly as well but they aren’t trying to be grim, dark, and gritty as well.
The DCEU is in smithereens if the best effort they can muster is a re-hashed version of their marquee ensemble piece. Ben Affleck deserved better because his portrayal as Bruce Wayne is the closest to classic comic book/TAS Bruce Wayne we will ever get. The whole DCEU/Justice League centered project should be abandoned.
We started it last night and left off when my girlfriend said “wait, there are still three hours left?!” In the first hour, yeah it feels a bit disorganized. The music is actually weird. I’m reminded I really don’t like 4:3 formatting.
The music was probably the biggest letdown for me. Hans Zimmer is not an act anyone wants to follow, but the color and texture of the compositions in ZSJL are just OK. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t. Doesn’t detract from the overall experience that much.
Overall, I found the tone to be much more inline with previous entries than the theatrical release. There are some odd choices for humor that I was hoping were part of Joss Whedon’s reshoots, but they were not. Knowing that the studio did want a lighter tone I imagine the comedic bits were Snyder’s attempt at appeasing them, though this is complete conjecture.
I’d put it squarely in PSA 8.5 territory. Flawed, but not a waste.
My roommate watched it last night; he said it was okay. His biggest complaint was, unsurprisingly, the length.
I’ll probably see it at some point, but my interest is tepid at best. I’ve been largely unable to enjoy DC movies apart from the Dark Knight trilogy, which I think are the best superhero films ever made; Christian Bale will always canonically be Batman to me. Also just sort of sick of superhero films in general, admittedly.
Absolutely no opposition to them at all. The Dark Knight Trilogy was dark and gritty and I loves those.
Its when a movie tries to be dark and gritty but is poorly written and made so it comes off as goofy and silly at the same time where I have the issue. You can’t have both and the latter is a product of trying too hard with the former.
Yeah the flash didn’t really fit with the tone, I had hoped they’d have made him a bit more of a serious character, but a good movie nonetheless. I do wish there was more Darkseid, as his few scenes were some of the best parts of the movie IMO.
I liked it. I don’t expect movies like these to be Parasite or Green Mile, etc. It stinks that we won’t get to see where the story would’ve gone. Looked like there was a lot of potential.
I enjoyed it. Was pleasantly surprised as I did not have much expectations from it. Glad that Snyder got to put forth his vision, although the Epilogue kind of seemed out of place. Also very happy that the characters of Cyborg and specially Flash got fleshed out. It’s worth a watch in my opinion.
