What are people’s thoughts about the value of sealed cases versus 12 individual boxes of zexal era boxes going forward? On one hand the boxes normally always sell for more as a total than a case but on the other hand odds are there isn’t a ghost rare in those individual boxes as time goes on while there’s a 9 in 10 chance that the case has a ghost (and I once got 2 ghosts in 1 case). I think a case will hold some additional value for that reason. The main chase cards in those sets is the ghost so the fact that the box is in a sense “unweighed” would add value imo if I were ghost rare hunting. Curious if others feel the same.
This is just my personal opinion, but while I do feel like there’s more value in a sealed case in the future, I feel like there’s less stigma (for now) in buying an individual Zexal era box for a chance of a ghost rare compared to a buying a new modern era box that has a chance of a starlight. Reason being is that when ghost rares were released, no one really cared about them, so my perception is that loose boxes floating around most likely came from random cases, and not from sellers that kept cracking boxes until they hit a ghost rare. While I’ll think twice in buying a new modern era box from random sellers on ebay because I feel like the chance of getting a starlight would be not in my favor, I personally feel like the boxes that contain ghost rares in them are diluted enough currently to not need to worry about this issue. Furthermore, ghost rares are still cheap at the point where it’s not really profitable for someone to crack boxes to find the ghost rare to sell; they will definitely take a loss unless they get really lucky and hit it in the initial box or two.
In the future though, I do feel like it might be more of a concern, depending on the price of ghost rares. The higher the price of ghost rares get, the more likely I think people may start doing case shenanigans, and then sealed cases would definitely be worth more than individual boxes. That’s just my personal opinion though!
I don’t really collect modern so the insight on the starlight situation is good to know!
I do agree about the dilution of loose boxes. Most ghosts from zexal were under $50 up until like 2 years ago so I completely agree that most loose boxes floating around still have a chance at a ghost. It still for sure is not economical to crack a case to ghost hunt right now in the future might be a different story.
Zexal box prices have been rising pretty rapidly under the radar recently and I am now seeing more and more openings of them again on youtube which brought up this thought. With Zexal being one of my favorite eras, especially to open, I have followed the prices of these for a while and have always had a small stache on hand for whenever I got the urge to open products but now they prices are getting too high to justify opening. Guess it’s not as underrated as I thought it was anymore.
Yup! I would recommend buying new modern cards (if you are chasing starlights) from reputable stores because there’s a possibility that some people may crack boxes until they hit one and then sell the rest at full retail price!
Yeah, I definitely agree with your current thinking, and it’s honestly not a bad idea to keep these boxes in cases at one point. Eventually the higher sealed boxes and the cards goes, the more shenanigans occur. I know how you feel though! Zexal boxes were one of the economical possibilities of cracking packs at a cheap price, while being able to pull something good! It’s definitely an underrated era and I kept a small stash too, but yeah it’s not justifiable opening them anymore haha. I suggest maybe looking for sealed blister packs; I noticed some niche stores still carry some for msrp or below msrp price sometimes!
Overpriced (compared to other cards in the hobby) and unwanted (by most actual collectors who aren’t speculating on them purely for financial gain), but people won’t know until psa’s back log comes back.
I’m a long time lurker here, mostly for pokemon related things. I apologize in advance if my english feels dubious sometimes, it’s not my native language
I live on a french island in the pacific, and yesterday going to a store called “jouet club”, I’ve found hidden in the back of the store, covered with dust, some old yugioh card boxes. The store sadly have desealed the boxes to sell the packs by the unit. This is the dark crisis edition from 1996. No one care about Yugioh here apparently, because they never sold.
@melphis , breaks my heart to tell you so, trust me. You’d be surprised by how many official stores used to sell fake yugioh products in that era. I’m not really sure why as I was just a kid back then.
There are several ways you can tell the packs are fake. Best way is to take a look at an original one.
The packs you’ve purchased clearly have a poor print quality, the text looks pretty blurred. Biggest telltale is probably the way the pack is sealed (pay attention to the way the crimps are indented in the real pack, while the fake packs don’t even have them).
Glad I could help, hope you manage to return the boxes and get a refund.
The cards inside are also pretty obvious fakes btw. The cards coming from Dark Crisis packs are supposed to have the DCR code, while the one you’ve shown has SKE written (which actually would be the code for Starter Deck Kaiba Evolution). The most obvious thing though is probably the combination of silver eye of Anubis and 1st edition stamp. Original 1st ed cards always have a golden eye of Anubis.
