The pokemon go bubble also hit yugioh. not nearly to the same effect but everyone had a nostalgia bump and that increased the prices. It was definitely more subtly but it definitely happened. besides that i agree that they ebb and flow in different cycles.
Been considering buying some boxes so sit on that I consider to buy under priced vs desirability. Does anyone else here do similar? Curious to hear peoples opinions on sealed prices.
Ive been sitting on a few boxes, they tend to be undervalued, but truthfully, the pulls from yugioh boxes are low so boxes are only as good 5 holos you can pull.
You could make the same argument to Pokemon boxes. D+P boxes are reaching $1k USD and you can expect to pull very little. The ratio for some YGO sets is much smaller. The fact you can buy a Magicians Force box for $1.5k seems bonkers where as that would get you a Stormfront box? Dont get me wrong I dont think all YGO boxes are good buys and I dont expect big money rises soon but in 3-5 years I think there will be significant movement, more so then D+P and later booster boxes.
Also depends on what boxes you are looking at. GX-ARCV boxes give out in more of the 7-9 holo rate per box. Still blows my mind that 5ds boxes are on average now about $200-300 per box when GX boxes are only roughly 2 years old and worth around 3-4 times the price. With how many people raved about how great the synchro era was to play in (for context i started playing competitively at the tail end of 5ds/beginning of zexal and there were at least by me a lot more diehard players coming to tournaments when i started than when i stopped playing during pendulums), its surprising that they are becoming as scarce online as older boxes but not worth anything near it. There are still great pulls out of these boxes that are trending in the way of GX era cards. Also comparing to Pokemon standards, it seems to me that pokemon boxes are reflective of PSA 10 values while yugioh boxes are based on raw card values. That looks to me like lots of potential moving forward especially since yugioh cards are harder to find completely pack fresh since they are used to play the game first collecting second for most people.
5D’s boxes will probably catch up but I can’t deny they lack the flavour that made OG DM era and GX so good.
DM era has pure nostalgia, GX has insanely expensive ultimate rares and Elemental Heroes, Cyber Dragons but 5Ds lacks a cohesive identity and art style.
With the debut of 5Ds was jarring aesthetic departure from traditional yugioh. A lot of the anime designs are just incredibly goofy and weird looking compared to demonic creatures that looked like they could rip your face off.
True there is an overall lacking of incredible artworks in that sense but the signar dragons have incredible artworks and are very majestic. Design wise, the earthbound immortals have great artwork as well.
I also stray from the pack on this forum (at least from observations) as someone who has played this game competitively not during the original era and therefore like to collect cards that I used to play with, 5ds-Zexal. I have never been much of collect a card for the artwork on it for Yugioh. What the card actually does has always been more important for me with the only exception being the original anime cards that everyone loves but suck lol. As someone who played the game competitively, what mattered more was what the card did, not what it looked like so that moved into my collecting habits as well. That is why rarity plays such a big role in the value of cards. I always wanted to make my deck look super cool and blinged out. So for me, I have always collected the powerful cards in high rarities. Rarely have I ever taken into account what the actual card looks like art wise.
I will say that the old card stock they used through the end of GX is much more aesthetically pleasing to me but I do understand why they changed. The card’s effects def became easier to read with the new stock. Mainly spells and traps.
I agree that type of collector is in the minority but we see plenty of cards that share both attributes like Chaos Emperor Dragon. There’s other factors like the boxes being newer, reprint products and larger print runs which mean they will always trail behind.
Yes my 1st ed ulti CED looks very nice in my kaiba deck. And what you said is exactly why rarity of the card is key in Yugioh collecting. I also stray from the pack in that regard as I prefer original printings (most of the time) over the reprints in higher rarities like in legendary collections or the newer sets like battles of legend and duelist saga etc. I am a fan of the rarity bumps in packs like champion pack through the current OTS packs. Those are nice and valuable. Those are how I was really able to build my collection. Bought basically all of the tp holos (except for tp2 jar and tp4 decree) in NM condition from 2012-2014 for under $40 a card. When they spiked and i made at least 300% on every single card, I moved it basically all into sealed and am very happy with my collection before the sealed spiked 300%. I bought my GX 1st ed boxes (unintentionally all of them are hobby) from $70-$250. Another great return on investment there. I guess me being unique in Yugioh collecting put me ahead of the curves haha
I certainly don’t think we will see universal sealed price rises like we see in Pokemon. But I think certain 5ds boxes and sealed product will rise significantly from what is essentially double retail prices atm. As always I thought maximum growth will be in the original series 1st boxes. I am not sure how some unlimited boxes will do considering they are very cheap they are compared to 1st.
The prices of unlimited boxes I think will never get too high. What we have seen this past decade is konami’s willingness to print the unlimited packs from legendary collection (LOB, MRD, SRL, PSV, DCR, IOC) into oblivion. I wouldn’t put it past them to start printing some of the other sets again, hence the big price gap between 1st and unlimited. It’s the reason why unlim magician’s force is expensive. It has not been reprinted by konami since ~2005 for those collector tins. I would have significant hesitation buying up unlimited boxes of the original era because of that. GX and 5ds on the other hand I feel differently about. First off, some 5ds boxes are only available in unlimited (TDGS, CSOC, SOVR, ANPR). Those imo should hold some value since that is basically the only way to get unweighed packs at this point. The other reason I think this is that the post original series legendary collections were reprint set mega packs. I hope that does not give me a false sense of security that we wont see these packs in print again in the future.
I never really had a thing for the LOB 1st edition blue eyes artwork, probably because I like the SDK artwork and how it matched with the show, so I went ahead and grabbed this. Maybe someone can explain because I’m not that well-versed but the asian-english version of the SDK blue eyes in gem mint was a lot cheaper than the “english” backed copy. I’m perfectly okay with it because I actually like the asian back more than the other one, but is it cheaper because it was more widely printed? Or is it the same kinda trend between the prices of japanese pokemon cards and their english counterparts? The front is in full english so I’m happy with it. I might’ve even overpaid for it but it was a lot cheaper option than the english back and it scratches the collecting itch for me just the same.
Edit: I forgot the pop was 2 for this specific card, maybe its just not that popular? I dunno
my understanding was that the asian english cards were not legal for play in the US or Japan and thus wildly less popular. Hopefully someone can confirm
The Asian-English print isn’t considered to be the “OG” print by collectors. Collectors’ preferred print for all the older sets is North American English because it’s what the majority of the collector base grew up with, it’s the “pure” print that isn’t a variant of that original release.
