Will PSA Grade a Card if the Set is not in System?

Hi, I have seen some topics regarding PSA grading cards not in their system but the set does exist, so one can just change the number and name of the card. Based on your experiences, What are the chances of them grading cards where the set (as well as the spec # in the submission form) does not exist? If it is high, what is the point of the PSA Research Request where you ask them if a card can be graded? If it is low/average, is it a hit or miss or is there a better way to know beforehand if they will grade it?

I sent in some of my anime cards they didn’t have in their system before with no issues. But if your really unsure just email them with photos of the card and ask if they will grade it or not beforehand.

Depends on the set you’re talking about. For example, whenever TPC/TPCi released a new set, there must be someone submitting the first card PSA ever graded for that set, and PSA would almost definitely not rejecting that card (unless you’re doing something weird such as submitting leaked cards).

PSA would definitely have to do some research on the set before accepting submissions whether you ask them or not. If you don’t give them a heads-up before submitting, they will still have to do it before grading, which is done in the Research & ID step of your card’s grading process and ultimately extending your turnaround time.

Thank you! I just got my images back. All the cards I submitted were vintage (pre 2000) and the cards they graded are sets that are similar to the ones that already exists. Ex: Carddass Part 1 exists they will grade Carddass part 5. The cards that were rejected were ones from jump fair 2001 in animate and dbz original holo cards.
