Who is your favorite pokemon and why?

Good choices! Ninetales, Latias, and Flygon are all in my top 10 favorites list (although, I lump Eevee and it’s Eeveelutions altogether for #1).

Ninetales has always been such a majestic yet fierce Pokemon design, I love the Japanese folktale inspiration (Kyuubi no Kitsune), it’s one of those Pokemon that feel like they have no “bad” artworks across the history of the TCG! Ninetales (Aquapolis) and Ninetales ex (Hidden Legend ex) are my favorite Ninetales artworks but they’re all great!

Despite it’s beautiful appearance, it’s quite benevolent; imagine petting your Ninetales’ tail and being cursed to be a Pokemon!

Latias is my favorite Dragon type Pokemon in the entire series, ever since I watched the Pokemon Heroes movie as a child I was very fond of it’s design and playful demeanor (Which is my favorite Pokemon movie, by the way. The movie has incredible music, a beautiful setting akin to Venice, Latias/Latios were such a treat to watch for the whole movie, and the “bad guys” use an Espeon!).

Latias/Latios (along with Flygon) were really the first Dragons in the series designed to truly feel sleek and fast; combining the best characteristics in design from a Fighter Jet and Dragon in a way that is breath-taking! As I grew up and trained to become an Aircraft mechanic, I really appreciated the Jet-like design much more!

My favorite cards for the duo would have to be the Alto Mare deck cards, no doubt!

Flygon is such an incredible concept, combining the final stage of an Antlion (which looks like a dragonfly) and adding dragon-esque traits to the design. It’s cute, yet powerful looking. (Those “goggles” are such a well-executed design choice!).

As far as favorite cards go for Flygon, I would share the same opinion with the cards you shared, Flygon ex (Legend Maker ex) isn’t too far off though!

Generation 2-3 are the sweet spot for me in terms of my favorite Pokemon designs, I’m happy to see someone else share similar sentiments!

Other notable favorites in my “top 5” would have to be Shaymin (my favorite mythical and I find it’s quite an underappreciated Pokemon), Gardevoir, and finally Blaziken!

Such a hard question.

Any pokemon that embodies tradition, mysticism and connection to nature is always a favorite of mine (hence why Johto is my favorite region).

Celebi, Ho-oh and Suicune should be top 3. An outlier would be Sableye, i just love his design.

So my favorite is obviously Totodile, despite my favorite being a starter Toto was not my first mon, I started with Diamond where I chose piplup, then went back and played Emerald and Fire Red then when Hgss came out I played Soulsilver and finally got my first Totodile(in a main-line game) . Johto was the 4th region I played through and it is absolutely my favorite and full of so many of my favourite mon designs.

My first time seeing a Totodile was actually on a website where you typed in your name and it told you what pokemon you were, I got Totodile, my brother got sunkern… A few months later I got pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of time, which gives you a quiz at the beginning and assigns you what pokemon you are based on your answers and again I got Totodile. So I guess them being my favorite was kid me having an ego, that if I am this pokemon then it is the best pokemon. So am I anything like a Totodile? No, Totodiles are happy, energetic, and love to bite things, I am sad, exhausted and have a damaged jaw that makes biting things hurt, it is impossible for me to be more unlike this pokemon.

Totodile will probably always be my favorite because I’ve had so much fun collecting him, that expirence is now part of what I enjoy about Totodile.

To this day, I still say Gen 2 has the best lore of any generation in Pokemon.

  • great story behind the Legendaries
  • melancholy atmosphere in general (Ecruteak, Cianwood, the fact that Kanto is a depressing, stripped-down version of its Gen 1 self, etc.)
  • you get to play through Kanto
  • battle with Red

The list goes on and on.

Johto’s nostalgia is mind-blowing.

Diglett, Dugtrio, and their Alolan counterparts. Although, if I had to pick just one it would have to be the OG Diglett.

As a young kid, my favorite Pokemon was entirely based on the medium/media. I guess you could call me a FOTM (flavor of the medium/media?) type of kid. Favorite Pokemon in-game? Alakazam, because I heavily relied on Kadabra as my sweeper, but was never able to get an Alakazam since no one I knew had a link cable. Favorite Pokemon card? Charizard, because it was the rarest card of the time. Favorite Pokemon in the show? Mewtwo/Mew since they were completely OP in the movie. I’d say I was your average kid in that regard. I didn’t stick with Pokemon for too long after Gold/Silver as I eventually discovered computer gaming and got lost in the MMORPG world for most of my teen years.

Fast forward to late 2018 where I had a bit of free time. My younger brother re-introduced me to the Pokemon card game (via PTCGO). As a newbie, I wanted to build and play a deck that was simple, effective, and budget friendly. I ended building a deck based around the Alolan Dugtrio from Ultra Prism. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the deck and over the course of a year or so of just playing that deck the Digbois grew on me. I appreciated their simple design, how they’re often overlooked and underestimated. I’ve always been one to pull for the underdog (undermole?) and the Digbois just ended up being IT for me. Their meme-ability also didn’t hurt.

My favorite card of my digbois isn’t actually a card of either Diglett or Dugtrio specifically, but rather it’s the trainer card Flash from the Vending Series. Although it doesn’t have the most stellar artwork or renderings of the digbois, I think the fact that even at a glance EVERYONE associates it with Diglett’s Cave (which is funny since you don’t need to Flash in Diglett’s Cave) and the sense of identity and ownership the digbois have over this card just does it for me.https://cdn2.bulbagarden.net/upload/8/8d/FlashVendingS2.jpg

Aggron. It is forever Aggron. He embodies the steel type in my eyes.

  1. Badass appearance - he’s basically a metal triceratops on hind legs.

  2. Flavor text on cards and pokedex entries in the games go out of their way to highlight how this mofo fights for a living and treasures his battle scars. Keeps entire mountains for territory. I love it.

  3. In all videogames I have always loved defense over anything else. No matter the game, I’m the tank. Aggron fits that mold perfectly. Insane defense, solid attack Stat to boost. In the later games I would EV train his Sp.Def so he became even MORE tanky.

As for the TCG, I’ve actually got a near-complete Aron/Lairon/Aggron collection that I’ve mentioned in another thread. Both of the Team Magma Aggron artworks are awesome - from Team Magma vs. Team Aqua and Double Crisis. Crystal Guardians Aggron EX, and the artworks from Dragons Exalted and Darkness Ablaze are runners up.

I’ve never really gave it much though, but I have to say I agree with your statement. When steel typing is mentioned I always immediately think of Steelix and Aggron.

I’ve always struggled with one answer to this question. I think rather than a single favourite I have a sort of top 10 which has some mainstays and some which are interchangeable. If I was to give only a single pokemon as an answer I’d have to go with Giratina I think but even then it pains me to not say something like Lugia or Tyranitar.

Boy do I have a set for you: bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Ancient_Origins_(TCG)

The funny thing about this set is it also has ray in it which would always be in my top 10. When I came back to the hobby this was the 2nd set released and I opened many boxes of the Japanese set but unfortunately I sold everything I had of it apart from the shiny primals/ray to purchase other shiny cards as it just didn’t align with my goals.

I’ve always loved Jirachi. I remember I got the Wish Maker theme deck as a kid and it came with that amazing Jirachi holo. Always thought their design was perfect for a mythical pokemon, cute and cool

Medicham!

I started playing the XY game after quite a long time of not playing any pokemon games and Meditite was the first shiny Pokemon I legitimately found (sorry Gyarados). I absolutely loved the blue and yellow colouring when it evolved and ended up making a colour-matching (and reasonably competitive) team around it’s Mega evolution! Featuring a shiny Bisharp, a lanturn (because I was sick of seeing rotom-wash) and a shiny gliscor. I loved how versatile it was, and there was no better feeling than a high-stakes hi-jump kick to win the game :stuck_out_tongue:

Sadly Medicham doesn’t have the best series of card designs, but my favourite is this one.

Venusaur is my favorite Pokémon for a variety of reasons. The first Pokémon game I played was leaf green and I have fond memories of playing as venusaur.

Dragonite!
Deceptively goofy looking, questionable evolution line, AND YET…!

  • The OG Dragon. Get out of here Charizard!
  • The OG ‘Special Delivery’ Pokemon (Mewtwo Strikes Back)
  • One of the memorable ‘final bosses’ of Red/Blue
  • The mysterious ‘Lighthouse’ episode
  • The ‘Great Bowls of Fire’ Episode (the ending still makes me emotional!)
  • The Pokemon Generations ‘Lake of Rage’ video
  • His various cards (including ‘Breeder Fields’)
  • In the game he’s powerful. Allergic to ice but otherwise he can dish out a lot before he drops.
  • Despite all of his power, he likes to give hugs (in the anime).

I actually like his normal colors better than his shiny version, but I use this name online because it’s memorable.

Favorite artwork? If I had to choose one, the original ‘Dark Dragonite’. You want to talk about feeling the identity of a set? Arita has improved a lot since Team Rocket but he was already visibly improving by this set and I can’t look at this card without feeling something. I keep a played copy of it in my wallet so that whenever I have to open it for something serious I see one of my favorite cards staring right back at me, reminding me to be happy and enjoy life.

**Victreebel

**A well designed Pokemon that can truly stand on its own. Victreebel IS the king of the deep Jungle. Growing up to 5’7…can you imagine this beast on miracle grow?!

Let’s take a look at a couple of its PokeDex entries…

“Said to live in huge colonies deep in jungles, although no one has ever returned from there.” Whaaaat?

“Victreebel has a long vine that extends from its head. This vine is waved and flicked about as if it were an animal to attract prey. When an unsuspecting prey draws near, this Pokémon swallows it whole.” …Goodbye Persian!
Victreebel was also deceptively good in battle. I used to really annoy my brother with Victreebel’s combination of Sleep Powder and Wrap…can also throw in Razor Leaf and good old Hyper Beam for good measure.

Sadly, Victreebel seems to be on the bench in both the games and cards. Having not appeared in Sword & Shield and being relegated to a non-holo rare every few years. Its last original holo was in 2014 from XY: Furious Fists.

Sidenote: Dark Victreebel would have made for an epic card.

Please tell me you have a Bidoof collection (and do share pictures if you do)

@davie, the only card I have is the one I posted there lol I haven’t been buying many cards recently but I do plan on getting the rest of the Bidoof cards at some point. I’ll also make a collection post when I do get them all!

As my profile picture entails my favorite Pokemon is Charizard. As a kid my very first video game ever was Pokémon Firered with Charizard plastered right on the cover. From there I had a base unlimited Charizard which I adored, loved seeing it in the anime, and just loved all art of it I saw. Some of the sets I have the most nostalgia for Crystal Guardians, Dragon Frontiers, and Power Keepers all featured a zard and that definitely helped solidify my love for the lizard.

Charizard was always just so much cooler to me than any other Pokemon and that didn’t change. Come gen 6 with the introduction of Mega evolution it went even further. Both megas are awesome, but Mega Charizard X is just the perfect design for me and made Charizard even better in my eyes.

Pokémon is a huge part of my life and Charizard is a huge part of that. I have Charizard shirts, hats, plushies, cards and loads more merchandise that I have on me or see in my everyday life and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
