Which Charizard do I buy now? - Base / Dark / Blaine?

Hey all

I am wanting to buy PSA 9 versions of the following:

  • Base Set Unlimited Charizard
  • Team Rocket Dark Charizard 1st Edition
  • Gym Blaines Charizard 1st Edition

Right now, I can only afford one. They are all around the same price point.

My question would be, is there a “smarter” buy right? Does anyone see one of these going up in price over the next few months?

Like I said, I am wanting all of them … can afford only one right now.

Which do I buy?

Great question, I think if it was me I would go with the Blaines. Team Rocket has jumped lately and I think in my opinion it will eventually come down as it is currently hyped up right now so buying now would be on the high end of the peak if you ask me, of course the market is so unpredictable. As far as base charizard, everyone is trying to buy and grade these cards, I think they will rise in value but very slowly.

Base 1st > Base Shadowless > Shining 1st > Legendary Collection Reverse > Dark 1st > Blaine’s 1st > Base Unlimited

PSA Population reports in Mint 9:

Base Ul:2653
Dark 1st ed: 389
Blaines: 144

Obviously the numbers don’t give a answer in themselves as popularity is also a big factor. I would also probably lean towards the blaines charizard though as there are a substantial amount less graded at the 9 than the other two and I could see this being a decent investment for the future. Base set is more popular and always sells but there are so many at the 9 grade it could take some time for the price to increase. Rocket is your middle ground I think it has recently had a big boost but could slow in the next few months.

I get a ton of requests but when broken down to those three, base set Charizard wins easily then Dark and finally very few Blaine’s.
Personally, I would jump on the base first.

I totally agree.
But… I would suggest Dark Charizard 1st Edition because Team Rocket cards are only getting more expensive, getting one now is maybe a good move, while an unlimited Base will not.

Blaine’s Charizard has the most value still on the table.

Dark Charizard is hyped and on the pricey side. Base is oversaturated. 1st edition Base is a different story and would beat all 3.

Just looking at the numbers I think I will wait on the Base Set unless one of the auctions goes cheap. On the hunt for Blaine and Dark
