So are people mainly buying these boxes to open them so they can have mint cards to grade? Seems like a pretty expensive route to go and seems like if that’s the case the box supply will slowly disappear.
I would say the top reasons people buy the boxes are:
- To save and hope the price sky-rockets in the next fews year to sell and make profit
- They collect sealed boxes
- They are trying to make a quick turn around profit. Buying the box at a “discount” price and then offering a ridiculous amount for it in hopes someone will take the bait.
- To open the packs themselves and be assured they have NearMint-Mint. Whether its for personal collection, or to get them PSA Graded and then re-sell them.
I personally am looking to buy sealed JP. base set booster packs. I want to save as many as possible then open them up until I get the whole set. But at the same time there is that slim (almost non existent)chance the cards in the pack could be non-rarity cards. My reason for doing it the way I am is because: A. It will be fun B. It’ll be nice to know that I completed at least one set on my own. Whatever packs I have left over (if I get that lucky) will be re-sold. I also will giveaway a few and keep a few. I do realize that a sealed Japanese Base Set Booster pack is such a unique packs of cards, in that it is almost 20 years old and the first ever set. However, I would really love to get the set on my own - and I will still keep a few sealed for as long as live (or at least plan to).
*If I did somehow get lucky enough to get my hands on a Japanese Base Set Booster Box, I would not open that though
Take a note there are lots of poketubers that want & need unopened booster boxes. Quite many of them are trying to open every booster box made, so the demand is really high only because of them.
Really? $75 for a base set booster box? I’m tripping…
Yep! It was listed as a “Wiz of Coast Pokeman Box” under Magic of the Gathering Category… someone just happened to get extremely lucky that day!
Hmm its kind of too bad in some ways. Seems like some ought to be preserved unopened. But then again if I had spent that much money on it, I’d want to open it.
I guess the amount of unopened packs and boxes will slowly decrease.
They could be like me. I’m sure people are collecting the boxes for display. That’s what I’m doing with Dragon Ball Z. From the first to last set.
Dragon Ball Z = (:
And yeah it is ironic though, because if people never opened the sealed boxes they wouldn’t be worth as much. (But y’all know that already)
Yah unfortunately no large market in the DBz ccg. Great cards but can’t see people raving on about them and getting them graded with psa…
How many sets of those are there anyways (hopefully this isn’t off topic)? I think I have seen some of those PSA graded actually, I think on YouTube maybe, or a Japanese Auction site. (Could have been eBay though)
I don’t mean to go off topic but this needs to be said. DBZ is a huge market. $7,000 for a sz9 card. $1,500 for guru season, same on the guru promotion cards. Also I got outbid on a ultra rare dbz card, $380 for one normal dbz card. Kid buu saga box limited sold to me final price $360. I’m looking at paying over a couple grand for just a couple cards. To complete my sets. Once again sorry this is off topic.
Wow that is pretty cool! As far as DBZ goes I just sold the complete seasons for $180.00 hahahaha! I think I may buy a few cards here and there once I get my Pokemon Collection up and running again.
youtube does play an important part in price increasing for cards the past few years.many people have opened boxes of older cards and now many of the newer collectors want the nostalgia feeling of owning and opening older cards they grew up with.VS series is a prime example on that end around the 2010 time VS cards were like basically rare but not going for insane prices like they are now.You were able to get packs and what not at a good price maybe even around 700 for 3 boxes if you go lucky.but after a few people online started opening the packs more and more people were trying to get in on the action and VS boosters rose in price like crazy.the grass/lighting packs were the common ones out of the bunch while psychic/fighting were next and of course fire/water the rarest one in the lineup.its odd to see the grass/lighting pack go for that high since its one of the common ones to find.but the market for alot of cards have increased alot now with more and more people comming back into the collecting phase
That’s like the XY Base set. Right now you can buy the case of 6 boxes for $500. I’m sure if you buy it and keep it for 5 years, you could easily make a profit. I may have to get a couple cases .
No. No. No.
Now you have all the collectors hoarding things out of the wazoo. These boxes are easily bought.
Let me rephrase what I said. $500 retail for the box, $200 wholesale. If you buy cheap enough you can flip anything.
Yeah you could probably make a nice profit in 5 years, but naturally the sets that came out before XY will be worth more. Like the Plasma Freeze Set I hear a lot of people trying to save these. Ironically I think since so many people are anticipating the Plasma Sets to be worth a lot in the next few years the price won’t increase as drastically as they expect; rather, it’ll be some no-name set that many people are not expecting. That is just my opinion anyways lol. I’m just getting back into the scope of things, so I could be way off with my judgment.

No. No. No.

It is interesting though. Some new boxes (like Lost Link or Dragons Exalted) are very difficult to find. I would bet they are being hoarded but even so, that could make for a solid short-term investment even though they may not so great of a long-term investment. Personally, though, it isn’t something I would feel comfortable with.
Agree. These sets are definitely in more circulation than WOTC sets. If you look hard enough you can purchase pretty well anything DP-on for under $150. Which IMO isn’t that profitable if you pay 80 for a box… Waiting for two more seasons before it doubles… Idk I wouldn’t suggest it
Plus here’s the other kicker, and I’m no expert on booster boxes or new series so take this with a grain of salt, but while new collectors may be pulled in by nostalgia and the old school sets could continue to climb, that doesn’t mean they’ll go for the newer sets. The newer sets aren’t as nostalgia driven. Idk if I’d put my money in the new boosters as much. Maybe it’s always hard to predict price increases on anything. But what if the economy tanks, the new boosters will be pennies and the old stuff could decrease dramatically as well. But if I were going to sell some of my cards for tough times, the old nostalgic period ones would be the last to go. Just my $0.02
