Yeah, @traineramy can attest to the $150 auction win ;).
And I actually picked up both of them in CGC 9.5/10 very recently! Within the past couple months. I’ve owned many PSA/CGC 9s of these, but they’re pretty difficult to find in gem. Two of the most beautiful cards from the era, IMO.
Thinking about bringing that Absol to the Arita signing. The Japanese promo secret rares was actually such a great idea that unfortunately didn’t last long
Nice to see I’m not the only one who picked one of these up recently. Picked up a PSA-9 last month myself (which is still at my US middleman). Alakazam is among my favorite Pokémon, and with fan-favorites Umbreon and Lugia in the background, I’m surprised how cheap it still is.
I’m also there with you guys. I’m hoping Alakazam will see a little rejuvenation with the recent release on kadabra… IDK. But either way this card is a great piece of art.
There’s been a decent number of Alakazam cards in the english sets since skyridge. Not a ton mind you. I had one come through the other day from a hyper modern set.
I agree! On TCGPlayer I save a list of cards that I eventually want, but I usually only will buy one or two cards at a time. This one had been on my list for a while and I noticed recently that it started fluctuating in price, which kind of made me nervous. Then I checked out eBay and all of the $20-$30 cards are definitely played or damaged. PSA 9s I think were recently bidding as low as $50 or so, which seems like great value, although I personally like purchasing these kinds of cards while they’re around that $20-$25 range NM raw for the binder. I just don’t see a secret rare with these mons staying this low forever, so I had to just do it.
It’s just Abra and Kadabra that don’t get printed. Alakazam has found ways into the sets. The last kadabra was skyridge which supported the alakazam in … Majstic Dawn(?) Gold star Alakazam allowed it’s use independent of the evo chain.
But yeah, since there’s no Kadabra there’s been no need to print Abra as well so that was the last one printed. All the Alakazams printed from then on have been basic (except Lv.x) to avoid the Kadabra copyright lol.
I finally bought a scanner to speed up the process of documenting my slabs but now it takes way longer because I just dick around in photoshop creating unnecessary backgrounds. Two recent pickups:
