I doubt one exists, but I would pay stupid money for a Christopher Rush signed Mewtwo S4 box topper. I have the zard s1 signed by arita at PSA right now, and I have S2/S3 ready to go where ever to get signed by him as well.
Grail that I own: 1st Edition Shining Gyarados PSA 9 (Maybe I will go for a PSA 10 someday)
Grail that I am Chasing: Gold Star Latios PSA 10, Gold Star Rayquaza PSA 9
I just realise that the stamps are different for different years. I am fine with any year.
The 1st place variant looks much better than 2nd and 3rd place ones. This might be an unpopular opinion because many people prefer the 3rd place variant with Pikachu.
It honestly feels strange not having ant grail cards after finally finding the one I sought for 10 years haha
I guess if I had to choose, it would be the Spanish Chilling Reign Electrode? Maybe Pokekyun Psyduck for my Komiya collection. Not sure what else, though.
I’ve got a played Dark Tyranitar if condition isn’t a main concern. I assume you’re looking for NM cards though haha
Unrealistic to Obtain Grails: the first Trophy Pikachus, Trophy Kangaskhan, Pikachu Victory Ring
Slightly More Realistic: Play Umbreon & Espeon, Victory Orb Mew, any TMB card, University Magikarp, Master Scroll
Even More Realistic: Grand Party, 20th Anniversary Team Rocket & Giovanni’s Scheme Cards, Eevee Fan Club, 2005 Japanese Championship Arena.
That’s all I can think of for now. I will note that I am willing to take almost any condition for many these cards, so that will make it slightly more affordable.
Secret Wonders booster box. Has been my grail for the last several years. I can afford one, but it would be enormously financially irresponsible and they almost never show up on the market anyway. I have an Unleashed box and a Mysterious Treasures box, and I’m hoping to one day leverage one of those two boxes + other stuff for a Secret Wonders box. The price points on MT boxes and SW boxes theoretically aren’t too far off, but SW is substantially harder to find.
FWIW, we still haven’t seen any unlimited edition L1 cards except for the three non-Holo gen 2 starters, so I personally deem them as non-existent until proven otherwise. If unlimited L1 cards do happen to exist outside of those three starters, the unlimited edition L1 Reverse Holo Pikachu will probably be even harder to obtain than the freaking SNAP Photo contest Pikachu…
Best of luck with your Girafarig collection! Make sure you know how to spell it correctly before you complete it though, haha.
And speaking of the SNAP photo contest Pikachu, that’s my ultimate and unrealistic grail. When I started collecting Pikachu cards in all languages and variations seven years ago, I knew the SNAP Pikachu would be one I would never be able to obtain, unless I won the lottery just before one pops up for sale. Only 20 copies were given to the winner in 1999, and maybe a few extra copies might float around. But considering the last one sold somewhere in 2003-2005 privately from what I’m aware and none have been publicly for sale ever AFAIK, I assume if one should pop up for sale now it would go for anywhere between 100k and 500k USD. Not the kind of money I have just lying around (if I had, I would have bought a house instead of a piece of cardboard ).
A more realistic grail right now is one of the twelve Art Academy Pikachu cards. I’m happy and fortunate to say I currently own 7 out of the 12 Art Academy Pikachu cards thus far. For those unaware, there are 22 Art Academy cards in total: 12 in Japanese; 7 in English; and 1 each in German, French, and Spanish. The winners of these illustration contests received 100 copies of their card, and each card has some extra copies floating around.
Of the remaining five I’m missing, two winners only sold less than ten copies and currently refuse to sell any more; and the other three winners still own all or almost all of their 100 copies and refuse to sell any. The Farmer and Pikachu Emotions (the Emotions one is my personal favorite) are the hardest to find, based on two Art Academy collectors I know whom have 19 out of 22 and 20 out of 22 respectively, and are missing those two cards (and the one with 19 is missing the Mudkip as well). Apart from the SNAP card, the Pikachu Emotions Art Academy card is my second grail, since I absolutely love the artwork as a Pikachu collector. But given that both Art Academy collectors are still missing it, and Art Academy cards in general aren’t the cheapest anymore, it’s outside of my paygrade right now as well unfortunately…
So, because I can’t afford the two cards above at this point in time, my currently #1 grail I still deem somewhat achievable (for now…) is the English Art Academy card by Ashley. Some extra copies of these have sold, mostly by the eBay seller CollectorsCache (which is also how I’ve acquired my Queen of Hearts Art Academy Pikachu, from whom the winner also refuses to sell any of the 100 copies), so it’s possible more from Ashley will eventually hit the market. I mostly hope the winner will eventually decide to sell at least some copies of their stack of 100, since more cards on the market would mean a lower overall price and higher chance of finding one.
Why is this my #1 grail right now? Because it’s the final English Pikachu card I’m missing in my Pikachu collection. As most of you probably know, I collect Pikachu TCG cards in all languages and variations, and have already completed the languages Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Chinese, Polish, Russian, Thai, and Indonesian. I’m currently missing just 11 Pikachu TCG cards in total: one in English; six in Japanese (including the SNAP and four Art Academy cards); two in German; and two in Spanish. So that English one is currently at the top of my wish list, since it would be amazing to be able to say I own all existing English Pikachu TCG cards once I obtain it one day.
Don’t really have a singular grail. The things that I’m really after in the upper mid tier I’d say are things like mew orb, pika ring, and art academies that I don’t have yet. For the orb and ring I have the cheap versions without pokemon so it’d be nice to pair them up. There are options out thereon the market just higher than I intend to pay right now… we will see what happens.
I have never seen these before and had no idea they existed, but now I want them… But not badly enough to drop the inevitable five-figure price tag, should a copy ever surface. Any idea what they sold for in 2014?
Unrealistic, but holy grail is the prerelease Raichu.
More obtainable, yet proving elusive to me is Stadium Challenge Deoxys, that’s the last EX era card that I need to finish every set. I’ve already missed out on it twice by my own doing, let’s hope third time lucky.
Thanks for the well wishes, @tromboneguy360 ! @brendantheclayboy has basically hit it on the head regarding the Snap info though I’m humbled by everything else he said. I just love what I love. And any and all competition between the likes of me and other Gyarados collectors has always been friendly, especially including Shizzle.
… Unless we’re talking about a certain Ho-oh loving “Gyarados collector” Father Franklin…
