When I reentered the hobby, I bought a bunch of those auction lots where they have pics of a ton of crazy cards(gold stars/shinings/etc) promising old school holos. Paid around $300ish for a ton of lots. At the time I realized quickly that it would’ve been much smarter to just go out and buy what I wanted, but what I wanted was too expensive for me so I tried to chance it lol. Ironically those lots have done me well in the long run, actually ended up with some mint fossil 1st edition holos and a mint ex dragon latios ex so I somehow ended up profiting(this is two years later though )
When I first got into collecting, I bought an opened booster box of burning shadows. I thought that maybe the collector still kept the holos and just got bored of the hobby. That was my third pokemon purchase since I got back into the hobby. Nowadays I just stick to graded cards.
Now, I regret selling more than I ever regret buying. No matter the card.
I only regret purchasing cards from Sellers that make an excuse to cancel so they can relist it for a higher profit, or they don’t actually own the card. They tie up funds needed for other purchases.
The card i’m chasing now has been cancelled by multiple sellers with different excuses… the current seller has asked me to wait a week (twice) to procure the card at decent quality. Fingers crossed.
I really don’t have a purchase that I regret. Like most members of the forum, I buy what I like and am interested in. Therefore, if I buy and it subsequently went up or down, it doesn’t particularly influence whether I thought it was a good buy or not.
Stealing from Bulbapedia: The Palace in Palace Belt can also be translated as Hall of Fame, which is part of the Japanese term for entering the Hall of Fame.
There are very few listings for one of the translations and I ended up thinking this card was rarer than it actually is.
Had a bit of FOMO recently trying to complete my modern Kanto full art Gym leader/trainer collection. I needed the alternate Erika from Tag All Stars, but the waifu boom/fad hit and the prices shot up. Saw one in a glass case and centering looked good so I paid a premium for it, I think 16,000 yen… Took it home, and on much closer inspection under a light I saw the holo border has a peculiar blemish on it. The prices of those cards dropped off a fair bit too. In the binder it shall remain.
I bought a zapp theme deck from america, didint research or anything.
was so happy to get it that i not even took 2 minutes to reconsider it or search for taxes etc.
In the End bought it with taxes for 170€, that looks like a good deal today but i bought it 2013 and that was far above average price
its not like the big number but to that time i only had 50€ per month in total so i count it as my biggest no brain purchase
Yep, buying cards from Japan that are gaining in price.
“sorry but I went to the store and it’s sold out”, or “Due to covid we need to ask for an extra shipping fee, or you can cancel”, or “the store I was getting the card from from is closed and I don’t know when they will re-open”, etc.
Then they list the card later for a higher price.
The sellers should state they dont have the cards in hand, and shipping fees at point of sale are their responsibility, not mine.
This Nidoking I bought off Probstein123 on eBay is getting pretty annoying. Two weeks later still not sent.
Besides that I think I should have bought more graded cards and I definitely should have skipped modern. Also opening packs was a big waste of money
Edit: Pronstein123 told me to open a case and said they “double sold the item” I won this card at auction two weeks ago and he just now breaks the news he doesn’t even have the card. Scam artist of a seller avoid like the plague. According to their feedback they have been screwing a lot of people lately
What do you mean by skip modern?
Opening packs is like gambling, you do it because you hope for a good pull so you make your money back, against all odds…
But it can be fun! Also if you collect a complete set its helpful =)
Oh dang, they’re almost all dried out on eBay and are roughly the price I paid for it in 2017… I haven’t checked the prices recently, but I did check them during the massive price increase in late 2020 (~October/November) and they were still ~300 USD at that time. They must have increased not too long after in that case…
Well, looks like my worst purchase ever wasn’t so bad after all, rofl. Crazy to think how some purchases I’ve made for 30 bucks are worth 1k now, and some purchases I’ve made for 1k are 10k now…
