Are you still buying?

Since prices are high, and many people are selling, are you still putting that Pokemon sale money back into pokemon buying money? It used to be the common go-to strategy in the hobby, but I’m curious what people do these days.

  • I am just selling, not buying
  • I’m not selling, just buying
  • I’m not buying or selling
  • Most (51% +) of my Pokemon sale money goes back into pokemon
  • Some (less than 50%) of my Pokemon sale money goes back into pokemon

A small downsize of the collection and a reduction in spending in general.

I was too inclusive of things to include in my collection, and now it feels refreshing to be a little exclusive to narrow the focus.

I feel like that is a fairly common (and imo healthy) recent thing I’ve been seeing more of

Everything that isn’t a part of my primary PC is being graded and sold; at current prices I can’t justify leaving a bunch of cash on the table over random mid-era holos, random full arts, & incomplete side goals that I barely look at. I hope they find good homes with specialists that truly appreciate them.

It’s not even that I need the money, it’s just the principal of it. More than happy to re-allocate that capital into other life goals and more interesting cards, as well as open up some storage space.

I’m doing both. I’ve sold some of my more valuable cards and things that have increased in price significantly. Although I’ve been buying more than usual , most of that money isn’t going back into Pokemon. I’ve been focusing on cards that haven’t been pulled into whirlwind. For example I’ve been buying cards for my hidden fates sv PSA 10 collection as most of those cards have been stagnant for some time.

Selling as much of my non-PC stuff now as I can while the getting is good, and waiting for things to settle down before finishing out PC goals

I would love to sell more right now but I just can’t find the time after work.
My buying habits have not changed since 2017.
Even the things I am buying don’t seem to be effected by these egregious sales.

I’ve mostly reconsidered my buying habits and shifted my goals towards a minimalist approach. My main goals have all skyrocketed beyond what I can afford, so those are indeed paused.
I don’t have much too sell, so everything falls more in the beer money category. What I sell on fanatics gets reinvested in Pokemon though (usually binder cards and things that are still reasonably priced).
I feel that a slowdown is inevitable at some point, since without a retrace certain eras have become too expensive for me to collect.

I am considering selling my valuable psa 10’s and swapping them for nice 8’s.

Haven’t fully committed yet but some of my cards have gone up astronomically in the last few months.

My selling days are ahead of me but my buying days are well and truly done.

Still buying. A lot of cards are still at a price-point where they´re pretty cheap. I´m buying Neo PSA 9´s where I can find them.

Bought these two, and a Azumarill 1st Edition PSA 9 in the last weeks (it has yet to arrive). Total price paid? Not even 600. People like to think in black and white. An overheated market must mean that it´s time to sell, but you just have to look at the places people aren´t looking (yet).

Only buying, not selling

There are debut signs of a pullback on the Chinese market so I’m being a bit more attentist at the moment

I mean, I bought those three cards in 2024/early 2025 for 200 together. That’s roughly a 3x increase for a Lyleberr and Vertemes card.

Sure, it’s not 10x or 50x like some other cards but I don’t think these are exactly unknown either. They just aren’t that desirable.

Interesting. I don´t know anything about the Chinese market. Why would there be a pull-back? I´m mostly hearing the opposite (in other countries).

For now they aren´t ; ) Just as something like a PSA 10 Steelix (Neo) wasn´t that desirable. And then it went from 300 to 2600.
