What would be more rare?

Would the community know what is the rarer option out of these two ?

Or

Fan Club Porygon in my opinion is the rarer option.

Here is a great article from Pokumon @HumanForScale ā€˜s site that goes over estimated print numbers for the masaki cards. In gengars case it’s 36,000. Which is a pretty hefty amount still. In my experience I always find gengar on the market across all grades and raw fairly easily.

In Porygons case it was a awarded through the PokĆ©mon fan club, which was a program that earned you points by going to tournaments and other PokĆ©mon events, for those who earned 700 could redeem them for porygon. This was the highest prize to redeem and though it’s hard to come by info on how get points were exactly awarded I’d find it hard pressed to believe that 36k people redeemed Porygon. Plenty are on the market though I just don’t think as densely as gengar. Though never marry yourself to numbers this is just my impression from the market and pre established info.

I love them both! Have one already and plan to add the other to my collectionšŸ™‚

Love the masaki, but I will always choose Porygon.
Also you can have web gengar as a nice plan B, since they share the same artwork.

I know that the Pokemon Fan Club was active from April 2000 to December 2002.

There is a comment from an older thread showing a flyer about the Get points.

Seems that the most common methods were only awarded 10 points each (attending events, post card, purchases). Apparently, you could write articles which I assume earns more than 10 points if published. So, it wasn’t easy to obtain points.

I feel that it depends on how popular the fan club was at the time but I assume if it was popular, they wouldn’t have shut it down and restructured/rebranded into the PLAY club in less than two years. So, I would probably lean towards the Porygon being rarer due to how difficult it was to obtain at the time.

However, the Pokemon Company may have printed hundreds of thousands of copies of the club promos for distribution and for all we know, they could be sitting in abandoned boxes somewhere. Of course the same could be said for the Masaki promos.

I appreciate you thank you ! 36k does sound pretty hefty ! I wouldn’t know what would be a reasonable guess for the Porygon since I don’t think we know anything about the release number like you said

Well those numbers … are very different lol Looks like the Porygon is indeed rarer ! Thank you :pray:t2:

Exactly! They could have printed thousands and we simply just don’t know. So I don’t marry myself to the numbers just my observation.

The Masaki Gengar is my favorite art but the fan club Porygon is obviously rarer I think even though we don’t have official numbers.
I’d probably still choose the Masaki. I love the whole vending concept and the whole set.

I already chose gengar years ago, but were I to make the choice right now, Porygon all day long. The provenance is a little cooler, I think, since it matches what the mon was originally, and I too am confident in saying it’s a rarer card. HOW EVER, Gengar is going to be cheaper… a bit. so…

Personally, I don’t consider these two cards a good comparison. Similar kinds of cards, but the Gengar has risen more lately than the porygon, I think I remember, and porygon has been pretty stable over the last few years around 1.5K for a decent copy. (I don’t study prices on these so correct me if I’m wrong.)

Porygon was floating 2kish for a bit and has now stabilized around 1600 range.

The Gengar looks like it’s the more popular for sure as many want it for its great art and the very achievable collecting the whole masaki trade in promo set

Yeah definitely seeing the Gengar hitting around the 1.6-1.8k range as of lately

The Porygon is 1.6k and that to me is a great price instead of the 2k+ it was going for snot too long ago so may be a bubble for now who knows !

Also agree with you ! I said before but the Porygon is the choice for me as I love the art , and now reading how hard it was to get too 700 points for this card makes me want it more !

The Fan Club promo trio is such a fascinating set of cards which due to the GET point system stipulation caused the higher ranked prize card to be more common than the lower rank prize card. The point system seemed to be very strict in terms of the points you received in completing the tasks. So it kind of seems like a grind overall.

  • Eg: Simple tasks like posting a postcard at the official posting center got you 10 points. And you can only use the same posting center only once.

  • Participating in events, inviting friends, ordering stuff all gave 10 points. Seems like a bit too much to do to be able to get 10 points.

  • If you managed to get your article published you were eligible for points. Based on the type of article and structure.

The biggest award you got was of 100 points and that was for continuing your membership from first year to the next.

The points were only redeemable once for any prize. Redeeming a prize just sets your point count to 0 again and you start the whole process again.

So I can only imagine the mindset of the people participating who always aimed for the 700 point card since that was the top prize. Redeeming any lower prize means you need to grind all the way back to 700 points to be able to get the Porygon. This ended up making the Porygon slightly more common than the Eevee card, since more people just did the grind all the way to 700 points. This also made the 600 Point Magikarp the rarest of the 3 cards, which just got caught as a middle child between the easy and the more grindy option. The price and pop reports for the cards reflect this.

Also to answer your query @alleybro , Porygon is much rarer compared to the Masaki Gengar, but it is still the more common from the other 2 old back Fan Club promos.

Cheers!

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation I really enjoyed learning so much from the GET point system and it also made more sense too me now as too why the evee and magikarp is more values than the Porygon ! :pray:t2::pray:t2::pray:t2:
