Last year I purchased a book I was near desperately wanting as a christmas gift to myself. It was (and still is) my most expensive book purchase at $275 total for the book and shipping. This year I was wanting to get myself a christmas gift of sighthound books again but wasn’t wanting to drop nearly $300 again. I got incredibly lucky to find these books at their prices, even with having to cover the cost of shipping. Both are beat up and worn but their contents are the same as ones in fine conditon.
The Borzoi by the Borzoi Club of America Book Committee- $8 (Market: $50-$75) Scotch Deerhounds and Their Masters by George Cupples, Reprinted by Hofflin Publishing in 1978 in an limited edition of 365 - $15 (Market: $100-$500 dependent on edition/reprint and their condition)
Those are absolutely amazing!!! And the prices you found them for, that is just such a fantastic find.
I love old books but do not have anything quite that spectular for dogs in my collection.
The best I have found is a 1st edition John Muir Our National Parks at a library book sale for $35.
In terms of spectacularness of my dog book collection, these are actually quite “common” books. In fact, the borzoi book used to be $100-$150 but someone found a whole box of brand new books (about 20 books) and sold them for $20 a piece but by the time I found the person (30 MINUTES after their facebook post) they had all been sold. The deerhound one has been reprinted many times in the 130ish years since it’s first release but is just sought after and is quite literally a “you will pry it from my cold dead hands” type of book (or just expensive)
Probably my “best” books in my collection are The Saluqi: Coursing Hound of the East (the nearly $300 book), a signed copy of The Deerhound by A. N Hartley, and a copy of All About Borzoi that was owned by one of the comittee members that put it together. I also do have more signed sighthound books but it was either all copies of that book were signed or when you purchased the book you could check a little box and it’ll be signed lol
A close friend (the one who gave me the book I posted here back in October?) has all 3 books of a set that was not only owned by one of the comittee members (who used to be a major person in lure coursing) but also signed by all comittee members, signed by many of the major people or breeders in the sport, AND has many notes by all comittee members on nearly every page. There is only one set that is better than that and it is because the person who owns the better set was the breeder and owner of one of the dogs featured throughout the set as a breed defining dog (this is a dog still talked about 30 years later and still highly praised), wrote a section in a book, the books are signed by all comittee members, AND they took their books to every event and got nose and/or paw prints of every dog that was given a feature in the books (that they could). Both sets are phenomenal in their own way and make my entire collection a joke lol I’m actually pivoting to focus on magazines for now, unless I get lucky and find books at great prices, because the magazines are routinely thrown away by their owners because of the belief that no one wants them and that they don’t have any valuable information. Because of these magazines being routinely thrown away I actually struggle with finding any of them from the wide net I’ve casted, doesn’t help I’m in competition with other collectors/preservationists.
Ammo had a sale during black friday so i decided to pick up their new car wax. We finally had good weather so I double sealed and waxed my car. Very very impressed with the wax!
That’s amazing. I’m screenshoting this post lol and saving it so I can keep a eye out for those.
The signed copies you have are amazing.
I need to text Paula and see if she has any of the deerhound ones. I’m betting she does she has a lot of the wonderful art work as well, it just never crossed my mind to look for books for some reason.
I have a lot of fiction dog and animal books. A stupidly large collection of Black Beauty, 1st edition of Silver Chief and A Book Of Famous Dogs, Las A Dog, Marguerite Henry Books and other odd ball horse and dogs books that catch my eye.
I would not be shocked if Paula has an extensive collection of deerhound magazines and books, you walk into a breeder’s home and they will for sure have a stack of dusty books in a corner. It is a constant among all dog breeders lol I believe Paula still works on the magazine from the deerhound club.
Edit to add: I do have a LOT of fiction dog books too. Because of Winn-Dixie being a classic along with Racing in the Rain. The Dogs of Winter is a good one and based in Russia, no borzoi in it but kinda funny I have a Russian breed well after getting a small hint of curiosity about Russia from this book. I’ve been meaning to get a copy of Where the Red Fern Grows as I do love coonhounds a lot (not redbones as much as black and tans or english americans) and it takes place in my home state. For a long time growing up I wanted a dog but couldn’t have one so I read and kept a lot of fictional dog books! It’s not really a section of my books I intend to grow or really curate as it does take money away from the stuff I do focus on. All of them that I have were books from my childhood I’ve been able to keep
Yah she does still write not as much as she used to believe.
I’ll have to see next time I’m over.
I always thought it was cool that White Fang had a deerhound in it.
Never seen Where the Red Fern Grow book now that I think about it. I have gravitated towards and grabbed Collie books as well. My dad and his family had collies growing up and his mom did still when I was young so I have always been partial to them as well.
Keeping books from your childhood is great. I’ve kept all mine as well, and surprisingly all my rarer book finds have been from library sales, estate sales and so on so I haven’t spent a whole lot. Its been fun to pick them up as I find them.
Technically not that recent of a purchase as I already bought it in November, but I wanted to wait for my iPad Air 2 to reach 10 years of usage before replacing it o7. Anyway, even the new regular iPad definitely is an upgrade.
I want to start posting in this thread more. I’ve bought a ton of non-Pokemon items for my personal collection these last few months.
Will start things off on the odd spectrum. Did anyone eat these ice cream bars back in the day?
Kane was my favorite WWF character and I wanted to buy something nostalgic with him from that era. This is a test proof sheet of the wrapper for the ice cream bar.
Struck some eBay gold and found this. It’s so nostalgic for me I can still imagine what that ice cream bar tasted like. I completely forget they existed until I saw this for sale. I loved being able to get the cards in each box as well.
