What’s the rarest Charizard card?

I was chatting with a friend the other day, and we ended up deep-diving into one of those classic debates:
“What’s the rarest Charizard card ever made?”

Of course, “rare” can mean a lot of things, so we tried to narrow it down with a few rules.
Here’s the framework we agreed on — feel free to challenge or refine it:

  • It has to be an officially and intentionally produced Charizard card (no errors, no misprints, no factory mishaps).
  • It should be a standard TCG card, so no non-TCG items. (Maybe Jumbos could count?)
  • It must be a true Charizard card, not a cameo or silhouette.
  • All languages are valid, and so are test prints, as long as they were intentionally produced and not accidental one-offs.

Important note: We’re not debating market price or 10 populations.
This is purely about rarity in terms of total print run or estimated quantity produced.

My friend leans toward a few specific traits:

  • A non-English/non-Japanese print — i.e. French, German, Spanish, etc. — as these were usually printed in smaller quantities for more limited markets.
  • From a relatively old set — generally, older means scarcer (not always, but you get the point).
  • With a special stamp or event condition, like STAFF, Prerelease, etc.

My take was more direct:
What about the Disco Holo Charizard test print? Maybe it’s a shortcut answer, but it’s definitely obscure and scarce.

What angles are we missing in defining true rarity?
Any reward card from an event that we’re overlooking? Any region-exclusive or test promo that doesn’t get talked about enough?

Gonna keep my mouth shut til i find it :call_me_hand:

Its a fact.

Totally fair. Not doing this as purchase advice or anything like that.
I honestly couldn’t care less about Charizard cards (Mewtwo collector here).

We just stumbled on the fact that Charizard hasn’t really been featured much in trophy, participation, event, movie promo, or magazine cards. At least not nearly as much as Pikachu or Mewtwo.
That made it harder to pin down the least printed Charizard out there.

We had the feeling we were missing something, and ChatGPT was full of shit, so we figured this community might help set the record straight.

I’m gonna go with Unlimited Korean Base Set Charizard

Pretty sure @jaws knows

I have been summoned.

Japanese Expedition Unlimited and Korean Base set unlimited might be the two rarest Charizards.

Unlimited E1 should be non-holo, but your list sounds about right!

Does this count even if the card’s name is not Charizard?

AFAIK there should only be 1 copy

How many unlimited expedition Charizard’s are there?

What do you mean regarding the expedition base being non holo?

I’m talking about the holo card #103

Graded- about 5. Same as Korean unlimited. PSA graded 3, BGS graded 2. I haven’t checked the alternate grading companies beyond CGC because it’s unlikely anyone would have graded such a rare card like that with someone other than the main 3

Ungraded- the world may never know.

I thought all the unlimited E1s were non-holo. If you’re going by pop report at PSA, I think they may be mislabeled. Do you happen to have a picture of a holo unlimited E1 Charizard?

To my knowledge, this is true. Any graded copies at PSA are mislabeled.

Ah, yes. That was my mistake. You are correct

Maybe Akabane has a full Unlimited E1 set with holos.

Or he could print some more

Well I goofed and bought the wrong one

Maybe limited copies such as :

  • 2003 national stamped Charizard (the rarest/most limited English Charizard ?)
  • 2021 Japanese creatures deck Charizard (also limited edition, few hundreds ?)
  • 2002 Japanese Lottery Holo eCard (5000 copies)
