The first pack/box openings of the new Sword and Shield cards have surfaced on Youtube. I was wondering what you think of the new style of the cards (I know most of you don’t deal with modern cards but some of you are or will be dealing with them).
V cards - I think that these are an upgrade compared to GX cards.
VMAX cards - I don’t like the dynamic in the game but the cards look very good.
Regular full arts - this truly is an upgrade compared to the full arts of the S&M era.
Rainbow Pokemon cards - still not a fan but the glitter effect works.
Rainbow trainer cards - … they didn’t have to include this type of rarity.
Gold cards (Pokemon/items) - still not a fan but the glitter effect works.
Interested in your thoughts.
Ps. If there already is a thread discussing this subject please disregard this.
Not a fan of full arts and don’t like that they bought rainbow rare back, its ugly. I kinda like the glitter it reminds me of those dbs autograph cards but I think dbs did it better.
Heeeeeey!
One positive thing I noticed so far is that the regular full arts have an actual background again like in the XY and BW era, and not that same boring bland background the GX cards had (always the same red for fire type, blue for water etc.)
Still not a fan of the rainbow rares, I wish they had came up with something new…
The glitter effect is nice and the rainbow colors are more distinct. Background on full arts is much nicer. Not much change in commons and uncommons.
I think it’s an improvement all around. But they played it safe and only improved on the existing rarity structure. Maybe they will mix it up more as we continue through the SS era
Do I ever agree with this. Any card I can’t recognize from across the room cause it’s just a blur of colors and sparkles, I don’t care for. That’s why I love wotc era vintage. You could hold one up from 50 yards and still be able to name it.
I like these much more than the SM cards. The colors look much more bold and exciting, the borders are more discreet, and the text is not swallowing the cards as much. Everything is working to try and place more emphasis on the artwork.
I’m really into how the VMAX cards are actually partially borderless and the text is squished down to the bottom. The rainbow rares and gold cards gently remind me of the Topps Sparkle Chrome cards which, to me, actually helps emphasize their tier of rarity in these sets.
SS cards seem to be more in line with other current modern Japanese card games in terms of being flashy, and I actually kind of wanted to see what that would look like so I’m pretty happy right now. I’m still not a fan of the same artwork being reprinted in rainbow form though. I’d be okay with rainbow as long as the artwork was unique to rainbow.
i think they look great! the subtle changes to the RR design really lifts them imo.the busy over the top designs work great with japanese but im not so sure theyll look so good with english text. time will tell.
I personally like these new ultra rare cards. Full Arts having a background effect again is a huge step from the SM era and makes the cards look more lively. I think my favorite ones are V MAX Full Arts and Gold Cards - I can’t wait to see what the glitter effect looks like in person! I have a box of both sets coming but I also already purchased a Gold Zamazenta V as I like the look of it. (also Zamazenta has ended up being one of my favorite Pokemon from Gen 8)
Also yes raindow rares are back but there’s much less of them now so I don’t see that as an issue.
But now that waifu trainers can be rainbow rares, well… $$$
