What do you all think of the high priced Dragon Ball Cards?

How’d the topic start?

I havn’t been following the game but I love DBS/DBZ and looking at some of the cards whether they are worth $$, they look f***ing amazing in my opinion. I actually got into collecting Final Fantasy TCG regardless of value. Buy the stuff you like and enjoy, if it comes to the point where it is worth a lot great, if not, you still got a card you can admire.

Looks like score cards are being graded now?

Time to get my stuff graded xD
FYI: That’s basically full promo sets and various complete foil sets excl. Uber Rares.

So PSA 10 Awakened Power Son Goku has had an explosion in it’s population.

When I first commented in APRIL there was 88 PSA 10 copies.

As of June 4 there’s 141 PSA 10 copies out there.

This card which sold for $1200+ USD previously is now selling at BIN for $1000 and going as low as $680 at auction.

In comparison, the PSA 9 population has increased by 13 copies.

nostrodamus over here.

June 6th eh? Shoot me the Oz Lotto numbers for tonight mate, a cool 40 mil will definitely go down well.

This is a classic example of people wanting in on the pie and then getting desperate to sell. I don’t think we’ll see too much more population explosion, as in it’s not going to go over 500, ever. That being said it’ll be interesting long term where the values settle.

Can’t the decline in pricing for the card be due to the upcoming release and people changing their positions? Knowing the DBS TCG the next set will bring another ultra playable Ultra Rare with amazing art that everybody wants, and since DBS is such a meta dependant game; everybody will jump onto it.

@ozenigma when anyone says something that slightly disagrees with his opinion

Lol wat?

Here’s a single person who graded 6/8 PSA 10s. I have an odd feeling the owner won’t be holding them all as long term investments.

So I normally try and stay away from pushing DBS since this community is meant and dedicated for Pokemon, but seeing how much this thread blew up I feel obligated to chime in.

I think a lot of people need to take a step back and stop comparing the Pokemon TCG to the DBS TCG because at the end of the day we’re talking about one of the most prolific, oldest, influential, and really global gaming cards ever produced to a game in only its 2nd year of existence, and a much narrower scope market – mainly North America. Honestly it’s not even Apples to Oranges, it’s like Apples to Peanuts.

But with that said, what drew me to DBS is the fact that:
* for modern product, the artwork is above and beyond any of the other modern TCG’s
* they put the US market first – something I don’t recall Pokemon ever doing, especially after the WOTC era
* they actively send out surveys in the community and listen to feedback fairly actively
* they actually cater to both players and collectors with their general release and limited release sets

As someone who has bought into the game I will say one of the aspects I found interesting early on is most people weren’t that aware of what grading or collecting even was. I remember back then I’d ask people for condition, wear, scratches, etc. and they’d be like why? It was actually quite refreshing to see modern product released that wasn’t just sent to PSA and immediately posted for sale, which we all know with Pokemon is pretty much automatic.

Fast forward to today and most people know what grading is, understand the importance of condition, but are still those very same people who just a few years ago didn’t know. So what we’ve ended up with now are basically immature “collectors” – folks who are aware of grading but see mostly $ signs in their eyes and no experience or knowledge of long term holding which is why most graded SCR’s have gone through heavy saturation and volatility. And before you assume I don’t know what I’m talking about, I run the largest DBS collector group that I literally grew 5x from ~100 to now over 500 so I know exactly the collectors we have and it’s sad to say majority are new to this side of the world, whereas with Pokemon and especially on this forum it’s completely different.

At the end of the day, I buy the cards because I grew up with Dragon Ball, love the artwork, and love the chasability. Whether the game stays alive the next 5+ years is of course up in the air like anything else in life but regardless of what happens I think Bandai’s done some amazing things in the very short time this game has come out.

The raw card isn’t dropping, just the PSA 10 copies.

That begs the question, how much has the price risen due to people just wanting to grade the card? It’s definitely scarce and has a niche but it doesn’t dominate the metagame.

I agree 100%.

I think DBSTCG is one of the best supported TCGs I’ve ever seen at the organised play level. I also agree that the collector base is fledgling and will take time to develop.

I just think that the way they design sets is questionable. Specifically, so many meta-relevant cards are locked into promo packs and that the existence of secret rares at 1 per case kills the value of the rest of the cards in a set because an ungodly amount of product is opened to get 1 card.

Locking good cards away into other auxiliary product is a great way to sell something that isn’t the TCG like the video game but it also fatigues your audience. Locking good cards into tournament packs is a great incentive to get people to events but when the TP cards are 90% of the price of a dominant deck in the metagame you won’t sell boxes.

Box sales set the foundation for any game’s success. There needs to be greater perceived value in the product for the game to be around in a few years time.

Since I’ve received interest in the collector group I’ll share it here: www.facebook.com/groups/291619821450806/

It’s a closed group so you’ll need to request to join but I’ll make sure anyone interested gets approved

BGS 9.5 sold for $450 yesterday. Price continuing to go down pretty fast.

I see them as basically like any new Secret/Hyper Zard card. First graded 10s go for quite a bit, but the print quality is so good soon the market is flooded with 10s. I absolutely love the new DBS cards and started picking them up for fun myself, I think they look 100x better then pretty much all of the new Pokemon sets.

The next set coming out will have the signed cards again. Looks like gohan, trunks, hit, and goku again.
