Pokemon boosters vs Digimon and DBZ prices

All these sky high prices has made me look at other tcgs that were almost as popular. You can find 20 yr old dbz and digimon boosters for 10 bucks… and these were huge back in the day. Base pokemon booster is like 200. Digimon almost rivaled pokemon, so whats up…

Its making me question the prices late… as in i feel like all this is fully backed by instagram/youtube hype

Ask yourself how many people care about digimon today and there is your answer

Digimon always looked like some cheap counterfeit version of Pokemon. I honestly do not think I know anyone that ever liked Digimon.

old score dbz has some potential, but nowhere near what we see with pokemon. i bought some dbz boxes because i wanted to, but expect them to either crash to 0 or maybe move up 10% in the next 5 years. not much upside to a dead tcg.

Plenty do, they even remade the anime and have console games, same with dbz. Dbz had odd cards like the ss3 goku going for 3-400 bucks

You could have made a more convincing argument back in the 90s. Nowadays of course there are some number of people who care about Digimon and maybe sealed product will go up a percentage point or two each year, but you aren’t going to see significant enough returns to park $5k into it. I doubt you can even beat inflation… Lol. There really aren’t enough people who care.

If you like it, buy it.

If you want to make money, there are better options.

Just want to quickly point out that the Digimon anime was miles ahead in terms of storytelling and ‘logical’ worldbuilding.

As a child I used to like both franchises, but Pokemon had just so much more to offer outside of the anime. So I slowly abandoned Digimon in the long run. Still fond memories though. The anime intro song is also a fucking banger, at least in German

Yeah basically Pokémon’s brand value is miles ahead of the other 2. Pokémon made a lot of right choices to build the brand and keep it relevant through the years. The other 2 didn’t - that is a big influencer to growth of the tcg and card values etc.

I was a massive fan boy of Pokemon and Dragonball Z but Pokemon cards was huge compared to Dragon Ball CCG, its not even a competition. Naturally down the line, pokemon cards nostalgia would hit harder than dragon ball cards.

Have y’all seen dbz prices lately? 300-400 for ss3 goku is cute. Non ur, foil rares are hitting that now.

Digimon is still active in Japan but it’s dead in the rest of the world. Personally I liked it when I was a child, but Pokemon
was a whole other level already at the time.

Pokemon is the most profitable media franchises on the planet, I don’t think it’s fair to compare them with anyone. Digimon scoring 6+ billion is pretty damn good.

I own some series 3 and series 4 Digimon cards and packs and they still fetch a pretty penny due to how limited the print runs were. Lp-nm gold text raws of the more popular mons still sell for 50-100$+ . on the other hand series 1 and 2 are pretty easy to find still and i can pick up packs for 5-10$ all day long. I like em cuz digimon was my tv show as a kid vs pokemon was the tcg i played.

As someone who collected both Pokemon and Digimon, what it really comes down to is the franchise’s popularity. Pokemon has, by far, outpaced and outgrown popularity than Digimon.

Digimon appealed to a smaller audience. Prized collections of Digimon are found more in toys (especially the Digivices) which took more popularity than Pokemon toys for a considerable time in the 90’s/early 2000s until eventually being overtaken by Pokemon in that realm as well (to clarify, Digimon toys are worth more than Pokemon toys still, but popularity is still on Pokemon’s side).

Digimon cards for Series 1 & 2 were also easy to come by. Rares weren’t all that hard to achieve and it was easy to amass a full set pretty quickly - Pokemon was able to garner it’s rarity of cards a bit better, making “chase cards” more of a thing. Series 3 and up is where the money is in terms of Digimon cards, as they figured out a way to make “rarity” more established within the TCG (I also believe they had shorter prints but don’t quote me on that). Promos also are pretty high up as they weren’t widely distributed. I had a sealed Omnimon card from the original Digimon Adventure movie back when it came out that I sold back in 2012 for about $150 USD. Raw versions back then sold about $25 but now sell for around $100 nowadays.

yes series 3 and 4 are the big money makers due to short prints and the introduction of the gold text and harder to pull foils. sealed packs of series 3 fetch a pretty penny indeed. also french promos and packs are a lot for some reason. i’m not huge into it like i am on the pokemon side, but i do have some nice s3 stuff that i saved as a kid along with my movie promos.
