What causes this damage?

Attached are the photos of the damage concerned… if its not clear to see, the two boxed corners have no damage, they were positioned for better perspective.

9/35 of my cards returned from PSA like this, it is obvious this happened somewhere along the process… how does this happen?

Likely happened right during the encapsulation process, did they get 10’s? I’ve seen it more commonly on sports cards with sharp corners. It always seems to be just the corners for whatever reason.

I would say reach out to PSA and see what they can do. If they got 10’s, that helps your case as they would not of given it 10 sent in like that.

Do you have pictures from before they were graded?

Same exact thing happened to me with one of my submissions from a few months ago, and funny enough it was basically the same amount: I think it was like nine or 10 cards out of about 35 that had the same exact damage. They all ended up getting 9s, and they were unquestionably 10s prior to that.

They all received 9s, luckily they are nothing hard to replace though.

Im assuming somewhere in the encapsulation process as well. im curious what device or machine part comes in contact with the corner in a somewhat abrasive manner to leave these corners with a “frayed” appearance

I dont, and ngl that wouldnt help with this case even if i did

So weird, yeah a few were definitely 10 candidates unfortunately. Possibly something PSA can improve it seems

My first submission i had quite a few cards return with corner whitening that wasnt there before (july special last year). Shame too, i had a super mint base set venusaur that came back with enough whitening it got an 8. Not sure what caused it

You should be able to see the “first view” scans

May be mistaken but I think those vanish once your grades are done

it appears that it is not exactly the same, thus it’s less likely a machine part which is always the same would be causing it. Not impossible, just something to consider.

I wonder if they’re handling them - after grading but before slabbing - in a way that causes this damage. The corners of cards are also structurally the weakest, and so if force is applied, it’s more likely to catch. Would be any number of things, but as others said, it is certainly something PSA could improve.

Like @thurco said, i can only view the finished scan, not the first view. Fwiw the damage is present in the final scans

You are 100% correct I have never gone and looked back after a sub completed. Should have checked first

Trying to imagine what happened as it was in the graders hands to cause an abrasive fraying appearance to the card is hurting my brain. Did they have 30 grit gloves?!?

I was actually thinking it could be a relatively smooth surface. A table top, hard-plastic sleeve (which isn’t going to be part of the process, I’d think) even another card could cause this damage if the corner is already weak. Sometimes, I notice the corners protrude from the surface a little even on GEM cards. Probably a product of how the corners of the cards are rounded, but this little bit might be what’s wearing off.
Another reason I prefer Mint 9…

I always save my first image scans to a folder on my PC so I have them before the link is removed. I’ve never had an issue like this before though.

This guy had the same thing happen to him. He seems to be getting some compensation from PSA

Huh interesting, I remember getting back a PSA 10 JP Ray gold star with the same issue a few years back and being a little annoyed because I initially considered sending it into BGS as I thought it’d get a black label …

If you don’t mind me asking, initially, when you sent them off to PSA, how did you prep and protect your cards?

Penny sleeve, card saver, cardboard on either side of the stack of card savers, single rubber band (not right), packing foam. If you were asking me.
