The set would have sold hugely regardless due to the contents, “Champion’s Path” doesn’t sound overly exciting but shove some Zords in and you have a best-seller. They should have made more of an effort!
@azulryu, legendaries in general are pretty confusing, for example, there are more than 1 deoxys in the movie, and a baby Lugia. So it seems that there are more than one. But, it also makes things incredibly confusing when dex entries and card descriptions describe it as there only being 1.
Not sure if this is unpopular or not, but seems like these cards are generally liked…
Mega EX cards are hands down the ugliest Pokemon cards ever released. The giant Japanese lettering plastered across the card, the Pokemon themselves are so bland and generic, the colors on the card are like an ADHD fever dream. They’re just…so bad.
First time I’ve heard this opinion lol. Reverse holos are easily one of my favorite things about the EX Series. I don’t understand how anyone could actively dislike them (especially the ones with the holo art that you mentioned).
That a card came from a set is significant to me, completing the set is not. It’s been like that since forever. Not sure what more to add than that. There are exceptions (like certain early black star promos) but not much.
Agree with everything except maybe the Gold Star thing but definitely the last point. I feel an unnatural (or perhaps natural?) urge to complete sets.
And big agree on the reverse holos. While some might look cool (especially those in EX Fire Red & Leaf Green), I HATE that it essentially makes the set nearly impossible to fully complete. I must complete sets. I can’t complete sets with reverse holos. Especially post-EX era, the reverse holo does nothing more than pad a set and motivate more pack-buying. Adds nothing.
No unique art is a big one to me, I think the regular holos look better than the reverse version, and I hate how almost every card in the set is available with holofoil treatment. Feels like filler they made to make completion impossible (I’m not a fan of making sets impossible to complete, even if I don’t give a shit about completing it myself).
Even though I dislike the concept, I appreciate the beauty of the mid-EX era ones. Funny thing is, TRR is probably my least favorite pre-delta EX set (not a fan of owners Pokemon either) but I think that particular set has the most beautiful reverses ever made.
Reverse holo sets really aren’t that expensive to put together, depending on your condition preferences. I don’t think it cost me more than $500 to put together the entire reverse holo set for FRLG in NM/M condition. That’s less than what the Charizard ex alone cost me!
if i pulled a rainbow rare, full art, or gold card when i was 9 i would have shit my goddamn pants.
i truly believe the majority of people prefer wotc because they are nostalgic and have money to relive their childhoods.
Regular sets are just too easy to put together. If I want a complete non-holo FRLG set, I can just buy all the cards from TCGPlayer lol. Reverse holos add a necessary element of difficulty, IMO.
And I (mostly) agree with you there – TRR has amazing reverses. Though the HL and FRLG ones are my favorite because the set logo gets in the way of the art for me.
@c0ll3ct0r having the qualitiy of “being a set card” as defining standard of whether or not you like a card is puzzling to me. So would you choose a Steam Siege Shiftry over a Fan Club Porygon, only because the first one is a set card? And disregard any release history and artistic value?
Sorry I keep nagging you, it just seems so arbitrary to me. Can’t really make sense of it.
