What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon?

Is that actually stock art though? I thought the Sugimori stock artwork for Gengar was the one used for the holo Sabrina’s Gengar.

Kinda like how you have the two Feraligatrs in Neo Genesis by Sugimori but only one looks like the stock artwork.

I don’t disagree with your point on why this Gengar is so popular though…I don’t get it either. I had to buy a NM one for my binder set a while ago and even unlimited seemed unreasonably expensive for a non-holo rare. Pure Gengar tax.

He actually is saying the holo is indeed stock gengar as you were thinking. However, both are stock art.

It was very common in the gen 1 days for Sugimori to have had 1-3 depictions for promotional stuff, gameboy game stuff, and possibly auxiliary stuff — all of which often found its way onto cards, tcg or carddass.

Things changed up with neo, with most mons getting only the 1 treatment for the games. The 4/111 would have been the gold silver, and then he started doing a more gen 3 no water color thing for the alternates. So 5/111 was just made for the card/set or came after for other promotional stuff. Remember, Sugi from the beginning did actually do cards, just not very often. Some of these neo ones for sure are, such as the trainers.

I feel like these 3 cards in partiuclar capture the menacing nature of Gengar quite well.

Ah right, yeah I knew about the additional art for stuff like Cardass (a lot of it looks a lot more dynamic to be fair). That Gengar just threw me because they clearly did something with the colours so it no longer looks so watercolour-ish and early Sugimori.

gengar doesn’t deserve the ghost type icon status. He is lucky there was literally no competition in genwun

What am I reading?! Gengar has such a great variety of card art and is an iconic pokemon. It’s hard to think of many pokemon that have so many good cards in multiple eras.

Haunter > Gengar

Has better arts imo and a far more sinister look. Some pretty dark lore in some of the Pokedex entries too.

It’s probably not an “unpopular” opinion, but I seriously do not understand the people that list a card for 3-4 times it’s usual going rate and just let it sit there endlessly, without even entertaining the idea of a best offer.

It’s like the people that post a shiny Pokemon to the GTS requesting an impossible lvl. 9 legendary.

My unpopular opinion is not caring what other people think about what I do with my cards

Someone who enjoys the card but if someone else is willing to pay 4x the last sold, so be it.

So why list it anyways? There is a 0% chance it sells if not listed. If it’s rare enough, there is always a chance it sells.

Jokes aside, people list cards for prices way above market price for a variety of reasons. Some are just doing it for a flex, others to advertise, and then you have people who genuinely believe their card is worth that much. Ultimately, it’s up for the market to decide if someone is willing to pay that much. There are cards that have sat on ebay for years at “ridiculous prices” until the market catches up and said prices become the norm.

Isn’t this usually just to grab internet attention/traffic and drive it to that person’s ebay shop where most of their other items are normal/reasonably-priced? Forums and socials showing off these ‘insane’ prices in disbelief is just free advertising for them. I’m sure I’ve heard of people doing this on ebay as a legit tactic.

Those art academy cards are so cool. Those are so few in number that I feel anybody willing to ever let one go basically controls the market on it.

Didn’t they only print something like 100 of each and give them to the artists?

I dont think it really ever will with how Pokemon is marketed. I cant help but think of most ghost types as silly because of how mischievous they are in the anime.

haunter - cool disembodied arms
shedinja - ded cicada shell
banette - possessed doll
dusclops - cool
giratina - cool
aeigislash - possessed ded knight weapons
phantump - haunted tree
mimikyu - also a doll type thing wants to be like pikachu
