Generally, I seem to notice that the more experience and expertise someone has in things, the more nuanced their views.
If you’re following any view or person, that has little nuance, then it’s probably not a good example to follow. Not always. And of course, identifying nuance is a whole other issue. But I do find this true of most worthy leaders and exemplars. Tho there are exceptions and just as this post is getting long and complicated, so does nuance, so I’ll kill it there.
people under the age of 18 should not be allowed on E4
if the only cards you collect are modern (SWSH-on), you aren’t that interested in Pokemon and/or you have no curiosity about the franchise and its history
I don’t know about this, I feel like they should be allowed but that there should be some thread restrictions, places they can’t go, I feel like everyone no matter the age should have the right to knowledge, yes teenagers can be immature and annoying sometimes but that’s part of them growing up (still some teenagers can be very frustrating to deal with)
A lot of children and kids now don’t get as much social interaction as they should be, I believe that forums are a great place for interaction even if it’s not in person it’s better than a kid sitting in their room scrolling on their phones for a whole day without thinnking about anything.
I agree with this, people who aren’t interested in anything other than modern are only here for the hype and don’t care about the hobby for what it is. That being said collecting modern isn’t something I look down upon, it’s when they badmouth or don’t have any interest whatsoever in cards that aren’t modern that I get frustrated
I think this is an extremely unpopular opinion, but I am entirely sick of seeing scalper/scammer content on social media. Yes, the scalping situation sucks…Yes there are a ton of scammers on whatnot…
I feel like everyone and their brother is making videos about it, and Youtube is blasting my face with non stop videos about it. I would like to see people talk about something else. I might be the only one with this opinion, because people can’t seem to get enough of this type of content.
I think it’s popular. Videos, forums and other platforms have become outlets to vent or feel validation because their frustration isn’t going anywhere. At times, it’s better to focus elsewhere or disconnect and come back as Pokémon will always be around
Absolutely, and I understand why this is popular. I’m just exhausted seeing countless videos about it, and feel that this type of content is beyond saturated.
I think all of this is a product of two things: the people, and the algorithm. Both feed each other. The result is a lot of low quality trash, and it litters the internet.
I was sick of it too, so I now have my YouTube account setup to give me very few recommendations. I forget what the settings are, but I disabled watch history and seem to have really locked out the algorithm.
Because every time I open the app I am met with just a blank screen, a search bar, and a message encouraging me to turn on my watch history (I ignore the plea).
Instead I manually go to Subscriptions and all I see are the latest uploads from the creators I actually like.
Since I made that change I have found YouTube to be a much better experience. I simply don’t even see the bad content, so for me it’s as though it doesn’t exist.
As much as I should be biased, I have to agree on this. I would not allow 99% of my friends to even step foot in here (In fact, only 1 of my friends would be suitable on here). It took me a while to get adjusted myself, so imagine if a less…matured teen came in…
I actually like it because its drawing attention to the main aspect of pokemon cards revolving around money. Bad actors in the hobby are motivated by it, and by revealing the bad things theyre doing lets the world know to be more considerate of others, and slowly heals the community. It in turn also makes cards more affordable, and at a reasonable price VS the perceived price people want them to be at on the market in the long run. I guarantee you TPC has taken more measures than we see, and I say it all the time but the same scalpers/investors ruining the hobby also hurt themselves without realizing it. Its ironic really.
Unfortunately, there’s a good chance that we’ve barely scratched the surface of Pokemon drama content. It’s a gold mine. Less effort than the lowliest cat video and possibly even more difficult to oversupply. For every 1 person that’s tired of it there’s another 10 that won’t be for many years and another 100 that are only just beginning to consume it.
And, unlike the average community where most of the drama is either embellished, fantasized or just straight up fiction, Pokemon actually is a revolving door of constant drama. Ironically, the fact that the drama is so very real may be one of the few things that keeps a lid on it.
An 18+ restriction sounds very extreme. I have always hated unnecessary age restrictions.
My first online Pokemon community was on a GameFAQs Pokemon board, where I posted from 2000-2002.
(That’s where my username comes from — I was Squirtle1000 on GameFAQs boards back then. Always hoping to reunite with long lost friends)
Anyway, I got banned from there for being only 12. The age requirement was 13+. It was a Pokemon board. It was harmless. Yet rules be rules…
Anyway, my point is that gatekeeping solely based on age as a metric of maturity is genuinely unfair. Obvious exception: places with actual adult content, but that doesn’t apply here.
There are definitely some mature 16-17 year olds in this hobby who just love the cards and want to talk about them. Meanwhile there are plenty of 20/30/40 year olds punching each other in Walmart to get their Prismatic ETB. So clearly age isn’t the best indicator of maturity.
