Dusting off an oldie:
Ken Sugimori Art is just boring stock Art. I respect the artist and the cards are nostalgic, but just felt that most of his artwork feels meh
Sugimori’s art is kinda like the basic “This is what a pokemon looks like” artwork. Not “stock” art per-se, but it does become the stock art that everyone refers to. haha.
Kinda like Kazuki Takahashi’s “standard” monster models vs the more artistic stylized ones that never got released. Sugimori has some major skill, BUT it’s rarely shown on cards… ![]()
My fav are the ones that are CGC 7.5 Pop 1!!
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I can’t stand when autographs are on the art box. It literally pains me to see that.
PS: Shout out to @thundermoo for a great deal!
Well triple does just say his art in general is stock art which Im gonna disagree with. His artstyle in general is fantastic. There is so much iconic artwork from the 90s that really defined pokemons artstyle.

And there are some fantastic cards by sugimori. I’m a particular fan of his trainers.
But triple might be referring to cards with sugimori art that are his art (not made specifically for the card) with a non-hand drawn background. And in regards to that, there is good ‘stock sugimori’ artwork and bad ‘stock sugimori’ artwork.
Good:
Not so good:
And some of his trainers are integrated very well into non-drawn backgrounds where it’s not even noticeable that it’s ‘stock sugimori art.’
So I’m going to assume triple meant the infamous ‘stugimori stock art’ cards but if he meant just his art style in general, I couldnt disagree more.
100% Its odd because most artists are adamant about not signing the artwork. Maybe Fukuda was being passive aggressive! ![]()
People complaining (mostly instagramers) that sellers auctioning cards are pulling down the market are missing the fact auctions results = market price.
Most people in hobbies have no idea where the rebbit hole even is. Do we, even, Alice?
Pokemon is a hobby of consumption. It’s not healthy.
And that’s why I can’t stop. ![]()
I think wanting more 2D games is a desire for more consistent game quality than we are getting now with the 3D games. The recent release of Scarlet and Violet show that Game Freak struggle with these games. I would prefer them to try to return to the 2D style because those games were more consistent in quality. Unfortunately they wouldn’t go back to 2D because the current standard for Pokemon is 3D. In spite of that fact I think it’s fun to imagine a return to the 2D style.
Honestly, SV nails the exploration for me. I’m not a gamer, so I don’t need other comparisons to games I’ll never play.
They can certainly make the cities more lived in, but exploring Paldea and finding new Pokemon - as well as all the behavioural and texture improvements was something I’ve wanted for a long time.
Going back to 2D would not work for me with the random encounters and limited map.
I think so too. Maybe I just need to give it another shot but when I tried to play a year ago at release the game looked so bad I found it really distracting and didn’t finish it. I know it’s all about money and as long as the game sells they don’t care, but it blows my mind the biggest IP on the planet releases games with such horrible quality.
There are fanmade rom hacks that are 2d and far far better than anything Pokemons made since 2005. Maybe even better than anything gamefreak has ever made.
It’s because they’re made by people who care and are talented
Couldn’t agree more.
Renegade Platinum might be the most enjoyable Pokémon experience I have ever had.
I’ve been trying to hardcore nuzlocke blazed glazed for months. It’s very hard but fun. 3 e4s, 3 regions all Pokemon, new types on Pokemon that only had 1, brand new regions and characters
Step it up gamefreak
Reverse holos are a complete distraction from the Pokémon and art on the card. While it’s not terrible in a stand alone slab, they don’t look good in a binder, especially when mixed with non reverse holos.
Idk reverses make it way easier to see the art of a Holo. Like for instance this sableye you can see deep into the cave on the reverse and the holos you can’t really see much of the cave at all
That one does look pretty good actually.
I don’t think o really it’s unpopular to dislike reverses. People only seem to like them for the fireworks and the stamped of later ex eras.
Personally I kinda like them over having 10 bulk 1st eds. It feels better to me to have 2 slots of value in a pack over a pack with 1 good card and the rest bulk. I understand a lot of 1st Ed non holos aren’t bulk but they sorta “feel” like it if you know what I mean
