It’s finally been said. While I do like this card art, I think the wonky head proportions ruin it a bit for me. I always see, “the mcdonalds mew promo blows the expedition set art out of the water!” but cant help to disagree. The expedition mew is one of my favorite mew artworks; he’s just so damn cute. I even drew it for last years secret santa since mew was one of their favorite pokemon.
sunset mew best mew. I plan on doing mew next for the “e4’s favorite _ poll” series. we’ll see what the consensus is
Should be a great mon. I mean besides the coro mew, it would be interesting to see which are the other favourite artworks. I also know that Dyl is not alone in the Mew criticism since @decoypalmette also made an analysis on the Window Mew card. I think a lot of mew fans including myself just gloss over these inconsistencies with the card art and design till someone point it out.
Should be a great next Pokemon to check.
Cheers!
mew is my #1 mon and it pains me how much i dislike the _'s mew. something about it just feels off.
if i had to guess, expedition mew may be at the top. other strong contenders are the 20th anniversary arita sig mew and the cp5 saitou mew full art. i know its cgi, but i expect the Play! ex to do really well also
It’s such an interesting topic. Like many gen1 pokemon, mew has many different interpretations and suffered enough remodeling in these years.
But differently from a pikachu or a squirtle, Mew has intentionally vague landmarks and generic appearance, since it needs to represent the primordial pokemon, the ancestor, a fetus staminal-like creature.
It has some recognizable tract, like the ears, the weird frontal bone, the feet, that trick our brain in perceiving it like a generic plausible animal.
Other than this, mew is really popular and everyone is familiar with its simple shape and clean silhouette.
So my theory is that (giving its peculiarity, or lack off) it’s sufficient to change very very little in the artwork or anatomy, and that’s it: someone will think “nah it’s not MY mew” or finding it somewhat off.
I think you hit it here. For me, if Mew doesn’t look exactly like it does in The First Movie, it’s not MY mew.
Sugimori revised the design from the fontanel-retaining, hydrocephalus-verging, actual fetus-looking thing found in the Red/Green and Blue beta sprites to the stem homunculus emblematic of the fetal stage in the final Blue/Red version and every sprite since.
Anatomical consistency has regrettably never been a primary concern in the tcg but Mew is particularly egregious not only because its story seems to leave that option open but probably also because the fetus used to be canonical (albeit over 27 years ago.)
Needing to say “low pop” to justify the price is silly when its only low pop due to no one else grading it
I think most of the people that do this know that deep down and are just trying to find a buyer who doesn’t fully understand that, which is also stupid.
PSA 8.5 - LOW POP!
I honestly love it for that reason. Gives it a more ethereal quality. Kusajima’s mew depictions are my favorite Mew cards.
My favorite was when I see a PSA 3 listed, and in the title they say “POP 1”…., yea it’s a pop 1 because of its piss poor condition ![]()
how dare you. PSA 3’s are the pinnacle of budget graded card collecting. they are very good boys and girls. Please do yourself a favor and retract that comment. thank you
I can’t debate with you because I never played HGSS. Missed them at retail (I had fallen out with the games after finishing Diamond) and the prices for used now have kept me away.
One thing HGSS do share with FRLG is that it’s another duo of Pokemon games that badly need a re-release. What’s the deal, Nintendo? Re-releasing FRLG and HGSS would be a licence to print money.
Definitely agree on the Shinings…not a patch on the Magikarp and Gyarados from Revelation for sure. I love the Mewtwo for the badass pose but the general detail/composition is severely lacking. I still need to pick up the Noctowl, Raichu, and Kabutops to complete my unlimited binder set but I am hardly motivated to get it done.
But the rest of the artwork? Nah, it’s up there with Rocket and Vending for me. There are definitely a fair few crap holos with non-dynamic artwork that I can take or leave but there are enough good ones (Dark Typhlosion, Houndoom, and Espeon for sure) and certainly a lot of great non-holo stuff. I mean, it’s a Nishida and Komiya tour-de-force imo. And that Kusube Dark Haunter that I absolutely love.
Anyone with these opinions cannot be trusted ![]()
Dood! You gotta pick up a copy of HGSS and give it a shot!. Or Try it on emulator on your phone. Well worth the time. A+ game.
How can these statements be made by the same person?

@Dyl You thinkin’ baitbot?
JK, @inertgeometry
I appreciate the unpopular opinion.
Maybe everyone is either on the Nishida side or the Kusajima side, but not both. ![]()
hah just because i think they’re going to be at the top doesn’t mean they would be my picks ![]()
Hey!
I just bought a pop 1 PSA 3 tropical wind language card and it will not be downplayed ![]()
