What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon?

I feel ya but that card was made by one of the WoTC artists that was working on the early concepts for the set.

I was just being cheeky. Naturally it is cool.

Agree that the artists working for Pokemon gain a lot more exposure doing card art than any of their original art. Pokemon is the highest grossing multimedia franchise ever so it stands to reason they’ll get propped up working with that IP.

Strongly disagree with the notion that Pokemon artists lack talent and are only noteworthy because they do Pokemon art. Many Pokemon artists have a strong grasp of illustration fundamentals (lighting, shading, color, pose, perspective etc.), while also cultivating a unique style that depicts their subject in a new light. Artwork is always going to be a hit or miss with people, but isn’t that the whole point of appreciating art in the first place and discussing it with peers?

There is a bit of truth. They’re generally talented people but without pokemon I really doubt that they would be popular.

But I’ve always wondered, how do they feel about it? Do they think that people only appreciate them for their pokemon artworks? Do they even get tired of that? I bet that arita wants to punch someone after the 100000th sketch of charizard or pikachu.

I recall from the Arita panel that I attended last December that he said he didn’t really care that his Base Charizard art was so popular and that’s what people knew him for. He’s both and artist and a businessman, so if people are buying his other works because of the recognition his Charizard gives, then he’s not gonna complain. Gotta admire the hustle.

I don’t think its disrespecting anyone to say that Pokemon artists are made men. Its not even about talent, its the unmatched exposure. Look at the art academy winners. People know them and their personalities just from one single pokemon illustration. There are countless talented artists that will never see the light of day.

As a counterpoint, virtually all artists, even outside of Pokemon, become famous or popular because of some fluke event that puts them in front of a massive audience.

You could be the greatest artist in the world but unless you get put in a gallery or go viral online or are backed by some larger entity, you will remain unknown.

They surely can be grateful to be credited. I’m really not an expert, but Isn’t the norm in japan to not credit any artists (especially in the 90s)?
I remember some yugioh illustrator pretty bothered with this, like Akina Fujiwara (she created the charmers and a ton of iconic cards, nobody knows her lol).
I don’t think that cardass cards credit Sugimori, or that mangaka assistants are ever acknowledged.
The only other big japanese tcg that credits artists is Force of will (that I know, correct me if I’m wrong)

I dislike hearing the phrase “position” when referring to having modern booster boxes in your closet. It is not a stock of a company!

The 2 p’s I try to avoid are “position” and the worst, “portfolio”.

funny thing is that tajiri kinda flies under the radar… I bet most people don’t know the creator of pokemon but they can name tons of artists like sugimori, arita, etc

subgrades are a good idea in theory but meaningless due to inconsistency.

Additionally though, I’m not disagreeing, just trying to enlighten:
Remember that successful artists work for those exposures, and the ones that never work for them, will either never get them or fail to capitalize on the opportunity. That is an almost universal truth. As a performing artist, I saw a few peers who got those exposures, took advantage of them, but never worked for more exposures, or tried to capitalize on that fluke event, and as such, they’ve faded into the noise (or sometimes simply the background) and the fluke event fizzled.

Success = Preparation + Opportunity

Tajiri net worth estimates online go from $10 million to $5.6 billion. Definitely both wrong.

Charizard isn’t the cool kid anymore.

The art of the Legend cards is seriously awesome. But the concept of cutting an artwork in half and printing it on two cards doesn’t work for me. And if you get them graded, the gap between the cards gets even wider.
