Definitely, it’s very hit and miss. I think that’s a pretty good way of describing Fukuda in general, I can’t think of any other artists other than maybe Yoshida who has such span between great and horrible illustrations.
The best gold star that never was.
I like most of Fukuda’s work! I just wish that a different approach was taken or a handful of artists were tasked with creating the gold stars.
I feel similarly about the ex cards. I like Ueda and Koike as much as the next ADV fanatic but overall? This is just on another level completely and they gave him two illustrations.
This card is underrated I love it.
My appreciation for Farfetch’d (and Galarian Farfetch’d) has grown considerably since watching the SW/SH anime.
Pogo will go to the moon
I don’t particularly like Saitou, Fukuda and Himeno cards. Some of the least I like to see when cards are revealed. Really dislike the lighting, proportions, poses etc. They are just more unnatural than other artists.
Fukuda I understand, but Saito proportions his Pokémon near perfectly, as if Arita and Sugimori are looking over his shoulders. This is definitely a take worthy of this thread!
I’ll take it a step further. Kouki Saitou’s art is far too clean and by-the-books. He is so concerned with adhering to Sugimori stock art depictions of Pokemon that his work tends to feel lifeless in comparison to artists like Arita, Nishida, Komiya who are always innovating and reaching new heights with their craft. Saitou just feels like he’s been stuck in the same place since the early 2000s.
His Pikachus especially feel like they belong on Adobe Stock of all places. They are the most sterile, boring depictions of an otherwise cute and playful character that I have ever seen.
I agree that Saitou looks like he just gave the sugi stock images life. But I don’t necessarily see that as a negative but it does mean a lot of his work doesn’t really stand out. I didn’t even realize how many cards he has done until I was preparing for his autograph event
One thing I will say, based on the different artist q&a session I sat through, a common theme is that there are a lot of constraints placed on how the Pokemon looks. It seems like a lot of the classic artists make up for the constraints by putting more creativity in what they can control, ex background on modern Himeno cards often have SUPER detailed flowers and things. The pose in Saitou’s cards are typically very dynamic, the background in Yuka Morii’s work is another example.
For whatever reason, Komiya seems to have an eternal exception to this constraint lol. I think it gives him an unfair advantage.
Charizard Ex from Fire Red Leaf Green and Charizard from Stormfront are the last Charizard’s for which it is worthwhile to pay the “Charizard Premium”. These cards represent the finals days of the era when Charizard was king.
Nowadays he’s a heritage act.
Komiya is crap

I knew it
Liked for on-topic accuracy. and ONLY on topic accuracy.
Sorry, @simon posted it in the correct thread.
And tbf, I’m not a fan of Komiya’s art style myself, although his artworks did grow on me a bit over time.
Overall I’m more a fan of realistic art with Pokémon in their natural environment over painting art-styles like Komiya’s, with some of my favorite artists being: Naoyo Kimura; Mitsuhiro Arita; Kouki Saitou; Sanosuke Sakuma; Mizue; etc.
Greetz,

I swear to you, Larry will unlock the husbando market and now men will finally be big valuable pulls in sets and they longer be carried by waifus alone.

It’ll probly never use the term ‘husbandu’ as many feel it still invokes the traditional master-subservient patriarchy roles, however, I AM surprised cards like Lysandre (best FA trainer ever, IMO) are not more expensive. I’ll admit I haven’t been looking at prices much lately tho.
In other franchises, characters like Char Aznable have a significant fanbase.
Here’s a question: Are male characters in PkMn mostly weak in character development?
Lt. Surge fans, I see you!
edit: glad we finally got the FA Lance. Right, @rtas?
Most definitely! Immediately picked it up for 7 bucks and placed it next to Lance prism & Lance VS pokemon in my binder.
Char would destroy the waifu tax. He actually has a complete story, an antagonist you root for. He’s charismatic, goal-driven, and simply a badass. Boy am I glad he’s not a teenage girl holding a poke ball lol
