What are your unpopular opinions in pokemon?

Referring to Gyarados as “Gary” is turbo cringe.

So it’s not only me! I’ve only heard it from collectors. Many competitive players will say “Gyara” without the dos at the end, much more pleasing to the ear.

@papafrankgod and @ddk nailed it, but here’s an unpopular take on an unpopular take of a hot take:
If the hobby community is largely influenced by clickbait and manipulative videos, then we’re naive to expect anything reasonable in modern anyway. Are we?

My opinion and what I try to follow is this : What anyone else does, or what their character is - that’s their problem. I would rather follow the agency of my own thoughts and actions. My actions are my own. I’m under no obligation or pressure to yield that to someone else. If they want to waste their time and energy trying - not my problem.

For a hobby community, we have a very good support system (community) here on E4, which can be purely for the hobby but I am sure it can / has already extended to other facets in life. However, based on the topic of Jake above, I follow these rules:

  • Always be virtuous, regardless if I think someone else is not
  • Withhold judgement on people’s actions unless I know their beliefs/intentions.

Cheers!

You reminded me of this, which I keep bookmarked:
“I am not a Federalist, because I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in any thing else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all.” ~Thomas Jefferson

Is it unpopular to hate the BGS Black labels? What an unbelievable level of nonsensical hype.

I find a lot of post-DP era Pikachu promos both tacky and devoid of artistry. Many of the 90s/2000s Pikachu promos such as ANA, JR Rally, McDonald’s, PokePark featured stylistically rich and creative art; they functioned as campaign pieces but also allowed each artist the freedom to depict Pikachu however they liked.

However, with a lot of these post-DP Pikachu promos, they feel so sterile and constrained by corporate restrictions on how Pokemon’s mascot is able to be presented. Promos such as the Ponchos or Mario & Luigi have artwork that feels like stock art of Pikachu cosplaying other popular characters.

This isn’t to say all modern Pikachu promos are like this. You’ve got stuff like the 25th anniversary Stamp and Scream promos that pay homage to classical art while also being visually rich and enticing to contemporary audiences. You’ve also got something like the Yu Nagaba collab where the artist was given complete freedom to draw Pikachu in their unique style. Basically, I’d love more stuff like the latter and less of the former.

I won’t go as far as to say it’s better than Moonbreon (I like soulless stonk cards that True Collectors® hate), but I really did wish this were textured.

I actually feel a lot of the hype has cooled down for these early wotc sets in the past year. They’re still peak nostalgia for us Poke-boomers and pioneered a lot of stuff for Pokemon cards as a whole, but the releases that followed like late-era Neo, E-reader and Ex all feature more interesting artwork and card rarities.

With the exception of Base 1st Edition (which will always be a juggernaut), the rest of early wotc is in an appropriate place.

Its those pesky 1st ed stamps that kill the love for the unlimited. Im pretty happy they went away

There are people that would forge 1st Edition stamps onto Unlimited cards but what we need is a magic eraser to remove 1st Edition stamps.

One day we will achieve TRUE card equality!

Grading packs is so goofy. Paying a massive premium for a PSA 10 vs. PSA 8 graded pack is even goofier.

I understand the desire to protect your packs, but there is no way that the grading scale is well developed, validated, or reliable. I wish PSA would just have an “Authentic” label for graded packs without a grade option.

Do they grade pokemon marbles yet?

I don’t believe so.

If there ever comes a time when there are BGS black label marbles I’m outta here lol.

The protection is the most attractive. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has waited years for psa to finally have a solid case for packs. RIP to those who sent in during the old case days when they folded the flaps. :headstone:

Agreed, those old cases were hot garbage.

Gholdengo was the perfect Pokémon to be #1000. A great mix of goofy/strong/cool with a great evolve gimmick. One of the best new designs in years.
